DVD Description

This Screen Legends collection celebrates the comedic talents of Peter Sellers. The box set comprises four films, all featuring the outrageous Sellers in a lead role – THE MOUSE THAT ROARED, RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER, THERE’S A GIRL IN MY SOUP and THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN. THE MOUSE THAT ROARED - The world's smallest country, the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, keeps its economy afloat by exporting their wine, Pinot Grand Fenwick, to America. When the state of California bottles a cheaper version, Pinot Grand Enwick, bankruptcy looms for the tiny Duchy, so it decides to wage war against America in order to lose and collect foreign aid. RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER - In this third instalment of the popular Pink Panther series, the bumbling French detective Inspector Clouseau is reluctantly called back into service by Chief Inspector Dreyfus, when someone swipes the infamous Pink Panther diamond from the museum in Lugash. The prime suspect is the smoothly aristocratic jewel thief, Sir Charles Lytton, better known as the Phantom, who on this rare occasion is innocent of the crime in question. Attempting to avoid arrest, the Phantom joins in the pursuit of the real criminals, while his lovely wife, Claudine, leads the myopic Clouseau on a wild-goose chase. As usual, Clouseau's creative methods of deduction drive Inspector Dreyfus ever closer to the brink of insanity. THERE'S A GIRL IN MY SOUP - Having broken up with her boyfriend and kicked out of her flat, an attractive young girl befriends a middle-aged Casanova. The zany fun begins when she moves in with her new (and much older) lover. THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN - Star-studded story of the world's richest man, who adopts a young orphan. Together, they set out to prove that everyone and everything has its price.

Review of The Life And Death Of Peter Sellers DVD by afy9mab

Advantages: Fantastic performances all round, inventive
Disadvantages: Abrupt ending, missing chunks of Sellers' life

...that gives the film the air of a Blake Edwards movie, as does the gleeful animated intro, the preponderance of big name stars and the episodic nature of the narrative. It presents Sellers’ life as a film set, with the man himself often stepping out of the reality of his life and into his imagination as he becomes the people around him. This cinematic theme is echoed in Sellers’ documentation of his life through cinefilms and photography. It is a strangely apt tribute to a man who was only ever happy when he was portraying someone else. Geoffrey Rush is fantastic as Peter Sellers. Much like the character he is playing, he has a chameleonic talent for inhabiting a character (as evidenced by his Oscar-winning turn in “Shine”). He portrays Sellers as a man without personality or opinions of his own, who consequently seeks people to control him... Read review

Strangelove is the bomb
Review of Doctor Strangelove (Wide Screen) by utero

Advantages: great film, good transfer
Disadvantages: not many extras

...What better way to sample the works of Stanley Kubrick than to treat you and your dvd player to the newly released box set of the majority of his films. Included in this set as a bonus is Dr Strangelove, a bizarre and dark comedy that features a multi character performance from Peter Sellers. America's paranoia of the cold war is at its peak. Convinced that the Commies are polluting America’s "precious bodily fluids", a general orders a surprise nuclear attack on the USSR. The president along with his military cohorts attempt to stop the bomb by debating in the war room with not much progress. It also doesn't help that the Soviet premier is drunk and the Russian ambassador seems to be a spy. This is one of those films that remind you that not all comedy has to involve bodily fluids or functions. This is a smart film with some... Read review

Life's Rich Pageant
Review of The Pink Panther Cartoon Collection (Animated) by dadmancat

Advantages: Comedy to Stirling ratio
Disadvantages: wrangles over 'Return of'..inclusion of 'Trail of"

...5 Panthers caged in one box. Inspector Jacques Clouseau's misadventures as brought to the screen by Blake Edwards and Peter Sellers are available in this lushly packaged but ultimately disappointing 6 disc DVD Boxset. What do we get for our pink pounds? Well, it all starts off well enough with 1963's 'The Pink Panther', followed by 'A Shot in the Dark' from 1964. Then there is a massive leap to 1976, which thankfully circumnavigates the non-Edwards, non-Sellers 'Inspector Clouseau' from 1968. Sadly though, it also bypasses the 1974 'Return of the Pink Panther', a highlight of the series, and due to ownership and copyright issues, it was unable to be packaged in this collection. So, we are transported instead to 1976 and 'The Pink Panther Strikes Again', then 1978 for 'The Revenge of the Pink Panther', but most shamefully of all we get... Read review
