In summary, Screamers is a good, if not outstanding film and a good way to spend just over an hour and a half if your expectations are not too high. As expected, a waning Peter Weller holds the film togeather and out-acts anyone else on the screen. The support from his co-stars is acceptable, but not outstanding.
Screamers is unabashadly a budget science fiction movie with a limited budget. What it manages to achieve is not as impressive as "The Hidden" for example, but it does still stand head and shoulders above many others of the genre.
The film is set upon a remote icy planet once rich in minerals, now devastated by war and almost empty of life. A large decaying city illustrates how vibrant the planet once was, but that was then and this is now.
Two rival economic/military factions fought for the mineral riches of the planet, reaching a stalemate until one side thought up the idea of "mobile swords", self-replicating robots that would kill the enemy for them while the humans stayed in their bunkers and waited for the victory to come.
It failed. The "Screamers", so named by the noise they make when attacking did a Cyberdine and evolved by themselves, like a snowball dropped carelessly from the peak of a mountain to engulf an entire resort below. The "Screamers" have designed and built improved versions of themselves, human-like constructs that trick their way in among the troops and wipe them out.
Colonel Hendricksson (Peter Weller - Robocop, Naked lunch) commands a scant handful of Alliance soldiers left on Sirius 6B. A pragmatist, he is driven by the lack of support from their own leaders and disillusioned by a war that both sides are doomed to lose. He decides to cross the snowy wasteland in order to speak to the enemy before there's no-one left to negotiate with.
Risking death and the articulated blades of the screamers, he takes a single soldier with him for support, the young Pvt. Becker (Roy DuPuis - Jesus of Montreal). During their Trek, they come across a little boy, David - replete with Teddy bear whose family has been killed. They take him with them to the Blok trenches, only to have him shot at long range by Pvt.Jefferson (Andy lauer - War of the Worlds). David's inards are not flesh and blood, but metal and hydraulics. It was waiting to get into the bunkers and then kill them all.
There is scant welcome at the Blok Bunker, only two war frazzled soldiers, Jefferson and the psycotic Ross (Charles Powell - Grey Owl) and a mercenary-come-war profiteer Jessica ( Jennifer Rubin - Bel Air). After a shaky start, they agree to take Hendricksson and Becker to their command centre. Unfortunately everyone is dead. Under attack by screamers, they retreat - but not before Hendricksson uncovers sketchy details of a third new screamer design.
I'll stop the plot there, almost half-way in and before several of the main developments in the story. In summary, Screamers is a good, if not outstanding film and a good way to spend just over an hour and a half if your expectations are not too high. As expected, a waning Peter Weller holds the film togeather and out-acts anyone else on the screen. The support from his co-stars is acceptable, but not outstanding.
Advantages: Something to watch Disadvantages: you have to pay rental/buying cost
Wes Cravens Carnival of souls.
This film comes with sub titles such as: “Wes Craven unleashes another stylish SCREAMER”, and “A nightmarishly surreal roller coaster ride of shocks and scares!" But does this 18 certificate DVD live up to the dramatic sub titles?
The film opens quite peacefully with a young lady picking flowers. Having a basket full of them, she runs home to show her mummy. However, when she enters her home and calls out for her mummy, there is no reply! Is her mum gone? Has she turned into a psychosomatic woman, about to k ill everyone in sight? Well, no actually she is in the bedroom with a rather strange man! The young lady then sees her mummy....well maybe I won’t tell you in case you do want to watch it yourself.
This film is intended to be a horror, but to be honest it’s hardly ...

Again I'm a bit disapointed that they haven't included some great Chandler episodes. The One Where Everybody Finds out is my particular favourite and the One With The Proposal always has me crying. Episodes like The One With The Blackout are quite forgettable but still it's a fun dvd to watch.

Advantages: For Fans of Philip K.Dick Disadvantages: Not as good as Blade Runner & Minority Report
the whole movie.
Madeleine Stowe?s part is not exactly huge but still memorable, a more calm collective roll, unlike Dr. Kathryn Railly in Terry Gilliam?s superb Twelve Monkeys
If you?re a fan of the late great Philip K.Dick then you should add this to your collection along side the other Philip K.Dick adaptations such as: Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Minority Report, Total Recall (We Can Remember It For You Wholesale), Screamers (Second Variety) and Paycheck when it hits DVD.
But, if like me you are a die hard fan of Blade Runner then, the later adaptations have to work mighty hard to better it, sadly this film doesn?t just make the grade, which was originally going to be a series of short films, doesn?t really do itself any justice.
Now don?t get me wrong, Imposter is a very enjoyable film, the special ...
