Just like Scary Movie, Scream 3 is the “scary” movie that ends up being funny. Except in Scream 3, I don’t mean funny in the traditional funny sense, but funny as in “Ha ha, look at those idiots making fools of themselves!”
Paging Mr. Plot
Oh, I’m sorry, he must’ve been out of the building during the making of this movie.
I know these days Hollywood scoffs upon the idea of a plot, but this movie is ridiculous:
If Scream 2/Stab wasn’t confusing enough, Scream 3 takes place on a movie set as well, doubling the main characters that survived the first movie. For instance, enter Parker Posey, who “plays” Gail Weathers (Courtney Cox-Arquette) in Scream 3’s mini-movie. So, in Scream 3 itself, we have two Gail Weathers’, and two Dewey’s, two Sydneys,’s, etc. Who ingenious idea was this? As for the aforementioned people...
The Characters and Actors There is an unspoken, yet clearly drawn line between the “old” actors and the “virgin’s” (imposter‘s) of the Scream scene.
I’ll start with the newbies to this trilogy: All of these characters are shallow, one dimensional, and we feel absolutely no sympathy when they (predictably, I might add) get knocked off.
They are also quite forgettable, with the exception of Parker Posey, who we just love to hate. Her character is the funniest to watch, for she imitates the original Gail, portraying her as a paranoid crackhead who’s head would burst at the mere thought of a pin.
The Recurring Characters By the third movie in this series, we all realize that Dewey and Gail belong together, so we’re hoping that they would hurry up and get it over with. But no, of course not, the writers have to drag this out as much as possible, making this storyline worse than a soap opera, resulting in dulling the characters that we once loved.
Now withdrawn and paranoid, we even begin to lose sympathy for Sydney, played as always by Neve Campbell.
Character wise, the only high point was seeing Randy on videotape for one or two minutes, which he recorded before dying in the second movie.
The Killings You won’t find any original killings here, to the best of my memory. Like I said earlier, the whole movie is forgettable, so if I’m missing something, feel free to remind me. Anyway, I guess they couldn’t top the Tatum “I think I’m small enough to fit through the dog hole in the garage” scene, which I loved, so they didn’t even try.
The Scares What has the world come to when climatic music is the extent of creepiness in a movie? In Scream, we have great music accompanied by a reason for your extended heart rate, but in S3 all we have are simple “boo” tactics of discovering an innocent person around the corner.
The Ending While it made a little sense, I hated the ending. The killer isn’t who you want it to be, and the final scene is so predictable, I thought I’d puke. After three movies, don’t you think the “he’s dead, no he’s alive” stunt is getting a little old?
Overall While Scream 3 isn’t as horrendous as the second, it’s nowhere near as good as the classic Scream, which I’ve seen a record 27 times. Unless you’re a diehard Scream fan, I wouldn’t recommend this movie.
