How on earth did the ‘Scream' series get so popular?
It wasn’t that funny. It wasn’t that clever. It wasn’t that big. It however was a little scary, so that counts.
More importantly, it was there first (before the talentless no-marks of ‘Scary Movie’, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ and other knock-offs such as ‘Urban Legends’).
Set two years after ‘Scream 2’, we find that nothing much has changed BUT there will be a third ‘Stab’ movie.
Sidney (Neve Campbell) has hid herself away in the woods. Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox Arquette) is continuing her cushy TV journalist gig and Dewey (David Arquette) has become a technical advisor for the film....oh, and they’re no longer a couple.
Soon a murder strikes and detective Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey) reunites them both and they talk about why they broke up and other issues.
It becomes apparent they need to find Sidney BUT only Dewey and Sidney’s father know where she is....
Regards the killer? Well, he wants Sidney (it’s a personal thing....isn’t it always!?). and he’s prepared to kill anybody who gets in his way.
A spoof of a spoof can become teeth-achingly bad and ‘Scream 3’ suffers tremendously in comparison to it’s forerunners.
It may even be called unoriginal (the suspected non-involvement of it’s creator Kevin Williamson and the fact it took a year extra to make a second sequel may have something to do with it....).
The three primary characters of Sidney, Gale and Dewey are justly developed (maybe because they’ve had three films to draw them out....no excuse for the others) BUT the supporting cast aren’t particularly welcome OR appealing.
The cast made to resemble each of the original characters bar Parker Posey’s intemittently short BUT hilarious portrayal as Gale Weathers are just so bland and cardboard, it makes you want to wince.
Marco Beltrani’s menacing score is back BUT most of the film isn’t even scary so what’s the point?
I found myself rooting for the killer to bump some of them off.
One point though (and if you’ve seen the film, you can empathise....), how on earth did Sidney not know?
Don’t ruin your enjoyment by feeling the need of completing the series. Leave it be!
