If you like scary movies then you have probably seen I Know What You Last Summer and Final Destination but the original Scary Movie was Wes Cravens Scream. It was a huge hit and indeed I liked it. So then came along Scream 2 and then Scream 3. I have always though that with sequels more money is ploughed into them so that they are bigger and better. So does Scream 3 manage this?
The plot is very similar to its predecessors. This time around the murders happen during the filming of a movie called stab 3 based on the events of the Woodsboro murders. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) who was in hiding after the events of the first two movies is now drawn into the open after the new killings. Then begins the usual game of cat and mouse as the knife-yielding murderer could pop out at any point. It isn’t anything special as it is much the same as the previous two. It lacks pace and at points is predictable. The one thing it has got in its favour is the fact that you can’t guess the killer, which keeps you watching so that you know. I am being a bit harsh on it because it has some good moments.
The acting throughout is very good Neve Campbell in particular does a brilliant job at the one the killer is really after. She manages to show her fear excellently and yet at the end her character changes to stand up to the killer in a come and get me type of way. David Arquette also does a brilliant job in reprising his role from the previous movies, as too does Courtney Cox Arquette. It is strange because the real people see the people that play them in Stab 3. If you can understand that. So basically there are the stars of the original movie and their look-alikes all in one movie. It is actually not that confusing in the movie but what I am trying to say is that everyone involved does a great job on the acting front. The real star of the show is of course the killer but I won’t spoil it for you.
The action is the usual cat and mouse, killer chasing victim type stuff. It is pretty much the same ground that its prequels covers but it adds a few new elements. It has a tense bit at the start where the killer causes a celebrity to rush home at insane speeds through heavy traffic only to be killed. There is also a massive explosion but its still lacks that something, that little extra something to make it stand out. This therefore makes it just another Scream. As for it being a horror? Well there is nothing remotely scary about it although the chase scenes are well staged and tense it doesn’t scare you one bit.
Do you like Scary Movies? If the answer to the question was yes then I suggest you watch something else because hiding behind the sofa isn’t necessary for this one. If however you fancy watching an entertaining movie that will not astound or amaze you then give it a go.
