When Dawson's Creek creator Kevin Williamson created the original Scream movie he single-handedly re-wrote the rules for creating a modern horror flick. Williamson included all the witty, post-modern, self-referential elements that made his TV series so refreshing and satirised the traditions of the teen slasher movie.
It seems that every horror movie that is released today is expected to be a post-Scream irony-fest. But Scream wasn't a simple spoof. It was a shockingly effective and stylish chiller in its own right.
The horror genre is well known for spawning superfluous sequels but Scream 3 is no tired rehash of the original formula. The story was originally conceived as a trilogy and Scream 3 gives the accomplished horror director Wes Craven (of Nightmare on Elm Street fame) the chance to tie up the loose ends from the first two films and put a new spin on the whole saga.
The story is based around the production of the fictional movie Stab 3. You'll remember that Stab was the film (featured in Scream 2) of the Woodsboro Murders from the original Scream. Confused? Well, what we end up with is a trilogy of films within a trilogy of films, based on the original trilogy!
It's a very playful, movie literate approach and gives the filmakers plenty of scope to gently send themselves up.
Anyway, the cast of the fictional movie, Stab 3, start dropping dead and it looks like the original murders are being re-created using the actors starring in the film. This forces the survivors of the real Woodsboro murders out of hiding to confront the killer, led by heroine Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell). She is helped as ever by the good natured Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) and the interfering TV news reporter Gail Weathers (Friends star Courtney Cox).
Why is someone determined to re-create the horrific past of Woodsboro? Is it a simple copycat psycho or is there more to the original murders than meets the eye? Who exactly was Sydney Prescott's mother? This and many other questions and plot twists give the film real bite.
Scream 3 is packed with suspense, laughs and gore-packed murder, making it a must see for any fans of the original. Although the Scream movies have always joked about the conventions of slasher movies they have also always followed those same rules. As one of the characters in Scream 3 points out, in movie trilogies all bets are off. Anything can happen. New relationships are revealed between old characters, established facts can be turned on their head in the blink of an eye and even favourite characters can be killed off. Scream 3 will have you nervously gripped to the screen until the shocking final revelations!
The DVD edition is fantastic with exceptional visual clarity and stunning sound. On the disc you'll find some fascinating out-takes originally left on the cutting room floor, deleted scenes, a look behind the scenes of the movie and an exciting alternate ending. It also contains an informative audio commentary from the master of horror Wes Craven, plus the cast and crew. All this plus biographies of the leading actors and two original theatrical trailers.
