Wes is back again with the second instalment is the Scream trilogy. The survivors of the original are back. Sydney (Campbell) is now in college and trying her darndest to forget what happened to her a year ago. She is a theatre major with a new crew of friends including survivor Randy (Jamie Kennedy) and things seem to be going fine. Meanwhile Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) has cashed in on Sydney’s story by publishing a book and a movie ironically called Stab, about Sydney's "horror story". The movie within the movie stars Heather Graham of Boogie Nights as Casey (Drew Barrymore) and the appealing (ugh) Tori Spelling as Sydney. While Gale is basking in the buckaroo's it seems the story isn’t over. Jada Pinkett puts on Barrymore's shoes as the fataled femme in the opening sequence. Although she tries her hardest she doesn’t match to Barrymore, but its still pretty darn scary.
The situation with Pinkett is spread all over the news, the reports of a copycat killer swarm Sydney’s college and hordes of reporters await at Sydney’s doorstep. To say the least it causes a strain on her relationship with her boyfriend (Jerry O'Conell). Next thing you know there's madness all over the campus and Gale herself shows up, just to be bitch slapped by Sydney again. Other hero's of the original including old Deputy Dewey (Arquette) show up to help Neve through this troubled time.
But some kids dont take notice of what’s going on and a sorority party goes on as if everything’s fine. That’s when Sydney notices things are closer to home than she thinks when a sorority girl (Sarah Michelle Gellar) shows up...well...squished. Then its a race to find out who the killer is before the killer finds his way to Sydney. Cotton Weary (Liev Shrieber) the man who was convicted, and later let free, for killing Sydney’s mother is hanging around in all the wrong places, a determined reporter (Laurie Metcalf) may be doing more than covering the news, and a handful of other suspects are waiting behind door number two. As in the first, its a whodunit which you probably wont suspect.
Although this sequel lacks the originality the first had, it still provides just as many thrills, and a shocking finale. The cast is fine, not suffering from a weak link or bad actor. The writing is strong, but isn’t as packed as the first. Even though the originality is lost, the movies still provides the entertainment and diabolical fun that many thrillers lack these days. Not as strong as the first, but still something to Scream about.
