This has got to be the must see comedy film of the Summer!
When I watched this film I was totally glued to the screen throughout the whole movie.
The film has a typical Scooby Doo plot. I'm fairly sure everyone has seen at least one Scooby Doo cartoon in the past - this film certainly lives up to the cartoons.
The film starts at the end of one of the Mystery Inc mystery solving escapades. The gang (Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, Fred and of course, Scooby) have just unmasked a villain who has been terrorising a toy factory, and been praised for their excellent detective work. However, despite Velma having thought of the plan to capture the crook, Fred takes all the glory in front of the camera's. Velma is disheartened by this, and Daphne is sulking over always being the 'damsel in distress'. As a result Mystery Inc is no more... the gang split.
I don't want to give away too much of the plot in this review, but here's a bit of an outline...
A couple of years later the gang are all doing their own thing - but one day, unbeknown to each other, they all receive letters asking them to go to Spooky Island as the owner needs them to solve a mystery for him. The gang turn up at the airport to depart for Spooky Island, which is where they all meet up again. There's tension at first, as the group didn't really part as best of friends, but it's not long before they are all working together to solve the mystery of why teenagers who go to Spooky Island for a fun time all seem to leave as perfect mannered, quiet, polite and civilised people.
That's enough of talking about the plot, except to say that you aren't deprived of a typical Scooby Doo ending where the gang unmask the villain to reveal his (or her) true identity... will you manage to guess who it is before they take his mask off? I certainly didn't... you'll probably have to watch the film very carefully if you are to guess correctly first time! And no - you're not deprived of the 'villain' exclaiming "I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids"
The main characters in the film are as follows: Fred Jones - Freddie Prinze Jr. Daphne Blake - Sarah Michelle Gellar Norville 'Shaggy' Rogers - Matthew Lillard Velma Dinkley - Linda Cardellini Scooby Doo - Scott Innes Mondavarious - Rowan Atkinson Mary Jane - Isla Fisher
The acting is superb throughout. Each of the main stars give their character the cartoon-like appeal that they deserve. Remember, this is a film aimed for the young and the young at heart, so the acting is not an over-dramatised oscar-winning performance.
Matthew Lillard does a superb job at recreating a real-life Shaggy. His voice is very convinving and he interacts with Scooby really well.
Sarah Michelle Gellar plays a great Daphne. Her character wears the same innapropriate clothes as the cartoon equivalent - short dress and very high-heeled boots - but some-how still manages to fight off the bad guys and jump about all over the place (watch her carefully, in a couple of scenes you'll notice her do a big jump wearing trainers, then in the next shot she's got her big boots on again!)
Freddie Prinze Jr carries Fred off well. He's the 'good-looking' bloke of the group and he knows it. Even has the dodgy haircut and dress sense that the brainy blond Fred had in the cartoon.
The final (human) member of the gang, Velma, played by Linda Cardellini, also lives up to her character in the cartoon. Just enough nerdiness but still the brains behind the group - and yes - the orange outfit with the long socks is there!
Scooby Doo is animated perfectly into the film and you easily forget that he's an animation. Definitely a long way from the animation / real-life actors mix in films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit! Scott Innes provides Scooby's voice, as he has on a few other of the Scooby cartoons and animated films.
The film is directed by Raja Gosnell, who has also directed Big Momma's House, Never Been Kissed and Home Alone 3.
The characters are credited to being written by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The story and screenplay were written by Craig Titley and James Gunn (II).
To conclude, this film is great... if you enjoy (or enjoyed) the cartoons, there is a good chance you will like the film. The film is rated PG, and is definitely suitable for kids of all ages. My partner and I both enjoyed the film immensely (I'm 22 and he's 31).

Funniest scene has to be the burping & breaking wind (aka .. farting) ones with Shag & Scoob! Nice review of a film that my kids, wife & I laughed all the way through. ... Tom

I would definately wantch the movie. I like the cartoon of Scooby Doo very much(Though I'm a fan of Bugs Bunny). I saw the trailor of the movie. All charectors almost suite to the original charecters depicted in those cartoons.Great Review.
