The DVD has the live concert on it from the Brighton Dome. The meaning of the name. .. Scissor Sisters.. A lesbian sexual position..
I'm going to take you on a journey through the colourful entity that is the scissor sisters.
I am not however going to analyse all the songs, firstly I'm no good at working out what the lyrics are about, and I think with a band like this sometimes even they might not know what the lyrics are about..
The band's first and only album was released in January 04, this is the only album to date, and they have been on lots of tours done lots of gigs and won lots of awards including 3 awards at the Britt's.. This DVD of the album was released in November 04.
You can pick up the cd on Amazon for £6.97 and the DVD for£14.99.
Pop the DVD on and what you get is a screen with features, song's, video's, extra's and set-up. I chose the features clicked on it and was taken to two choices, live at Brighton and return to oz..
Live at Brighton.. First you learn the names of the band.. Lead vocals.. Jake Shears. Vocals.. Ana Matronic. Keyboard.. Babydaddy. Guitar..Del Marquis. Drums.. Paddy Boom. Second keyboard JJ Garden.
The band are getting ready to go on stage live, the crowds are starting to go
in and the scene is set for the gigg. The first thing I notice is that the people going to watch the scissor sisters are great fun, they are in costumes, wigs, masks and all sorts. Great fun.
They open with Take your mama, I like this track, it is a jolly, happy song and Jake is dancing around the stage as he is singing. Jake clad in Red ¾ leather look pants tied up the sides with plenty of flesh showing, a red short open jacket to match with nothing on under it, and black boots and leather cap.. Very comical and gay looking.
Ana sings alongside him, she is in a black dress, vampiresque; she is covering the whole stage too with her dancing.. They are both a riot of fun. They take you through all the song's that are also on the album plus a few extra ones the crowd love them and like a lot of these type of bands they are singing along throughout the concert.
Scissor Sisters music, in my opinion, which is what this is all about, are pop singers, they have a sort of American honky tonk style, they involve the fans and sing there hearts out.
The song list is.. Take your mama. Better luck. Tits on the Radio. The Skins Magnifique. Rock my spot. Laura. Mary. Comfortably numb. This was a hit for pink Floyd a million years ago, i hadnt heard it but i looked it up and managed to get it on my mp3 player, i like the Scissor Sisters version better it is much faster.. Filthy/gorgeous. Return to Oz.
This is the end of the concert but the crowd encourages them out for the encore, they go on to sing a further two song's..
This is my favourite piece of the show, the encore is led by Jake and followed by a carnival of people dressed up in various outfits, there are two men wrapped up in bandages, and a huge furry blue thing on stilts, and much more, its absolutely brilliant, I would love to witness this at a concert and it is my ambition to get to a gigg of there's. The last song's, It can't come quickly enough and Music is the victim. They leave the stage and the crowd are still screaming.. It's a pity it all has to end.
Like I said previously I can't even begin to work the lyrics out, the songs are all great to sing along to, they are easy to follow lyrics. Mary is dedicated to a friend of Jake's and he puts his all into singing it for her.
The documentary..
Narrated by Ana.
Members of the band are originally from Kentucky, Louisiana, Portland Origan. They all live in New York City.
On the documentary, we learn how the band came to be.. It all started with Jake, he was singing and had a stage show by himself, he was around the gay scene and his following were gay and heterosexual alike, In Ana's own words later in the commentary, the audience is made up of Drag queen's, Drag King's and a mother who works in an office and goes with her daughter to see them.
Jake then met Babydaddy at college, they moved in together, dabbled with things, had fun, wrote songs and then sang together in various seedy clubs in New York.
Ana says that mayor Giuliani stopped all the clubs in New York, so Ana became the host in a small back street seedy club and through a friend she met Jake and Babydaddy and Jake decided that she was his kind of person and would be great in the band and so Ana was invited and joined them to add to the Scissor Sisters the name which stuck throughout the initial set up and till this day.
Next came Del, he was invited to watch them perform live in another backstreet club called "The cock!" Del saw these people and what they were doing and didn't like it so went home.. He then lost his job as a chain reaction because of 9/11 and ended up looking them up and joining them, he was petrified at first.
Lastly Paddy Boom, he is the bands drummer, he is the straight member of the band and they say all the girls adore him.. (not my type) He was a very experienced drummer and together they form The Scissor Sisters!
Ana describes herself as a "gay GUY trapped in a woman's body!"
Also on the documentary we see them being adored by some celeb singers such as, Bono, Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon, who said they are true fan's. This delighted Ana.
They have a following in Britain and we meet two guys who gave up jobs to follow the band all over the world, the band knows these lads, they are Ricky and John.

This has the Scissor Sisters as the characters from Wizard of Oz, Ana tell's the story in this fashion of the life of the Scissor Sisters.
Extras
This has the band sitting on a seat, a park bench where apparently Louis Carroll sat and wrote Alice in Wonderland, Jake goes on to quote a Lewis Carroll poem.. The Jabberwocky.
Then we have.. The song Music is the victim, performed by the band with Jake only wearing a towel oooh..

The Videos
Now this is the video that was made for the best known and chart entries of the songs. Laura(version 1) Comfortably numb, Take your Mama, Laura, and Mary. This makes the DVD very good value for money, you get a lot of viewing packed into one disc.
This DVD is a musical, carnival of sound colour fun and frolic's Scissor Sisters have a gay following, however Im not gay and I love em!! The picture quality is of an exeptional standard and the sound is dolby stereo and so perfect to the listening ear.. I like my music loud so I probably upset my neighbours but when It comes to Scissor Sisters I'd gladly upset them and appologise later. lol

Brilliant review! I'm already a Scissor Sisters fan but if I weren't I think this would have intrigued me into at least listening to their music, if not buying the DVD!
