The Fifth Element review
Advantages: Good story, wacky costumes, gorgeous visuals Disadvantages: None
The Fifth Element is a sci-fi fantasy action film written and directed by Luc Besson (who also directed Leon) and stars Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm and Milla Jovovich.
Set 300 years in the future, cab driver and former special forces soldier Korben Dallas (Willis) is going about his day when a woman comes crashing through the roof of his taxi and asks for help. Every 5000 years, when the planets are in alignment, a great evil appears, and will kill every living thing it comes across. If the evil gets there before them, light will turn to dark, ...

The fifth elephant.
Advantages: fast, and funny. Disadvantages: a wee bit dated
...back to try and destroy the world again. It was prophecised that this evil would be defeated by an unknown quantity, called the fifth element, that would unite the four natural elements to create the divine light. A race of aliens, called the mondoshawan, entrusted the knowledge of the fifth element to a human. The evil that had been defeated would come back in 5000 years, and the human race should be prepared. The knowledge was to be passed down ... ...As predicted, the evil arrived. The human race started by attacking it, but the attacks seemed only to make the evil stronger. It grew in size, and ferocity. But they are found by the current holder of 'the knowledge', who tells them that the mondoshawan were coming to use the fifth element to destroy the evil. But they are ambushed by the shape-shifting mangalores. Part of the fifth element was removed from the crash site, and put into a machine ...

When back in the twentieth century Willis is promptly thrown into an asylum after proclaiming to be from the future! Though this turns out to be a stroke of luck as the leader of The Army of The Twelve Monkeys, ... ...fact that he is a 'genuine' nutter. Willis's psychiatrist provides the love interest as they both try to outwit the terrorists and avoid the authorities hunting them. This is a superb, quirky film with a kind of a cross between Back to the Future and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest feel to it and I would highly recommend it. ...

A 'Surrogate' Director, Actress and Writer Would've Been Good...
Advantages: A lot of the scenes were brilliantly shot and the film did have 'something' about it Disadvantages: Lacked depth and overall direction with some poor performances
...to justify the existence of surrogates but it never seemed as if the themes were in equal balance; when one was mentioned, the other wouldn’t be for quite a while and when the notion of say safety was brought into the spotlight, it just seemed to be a passing mention rather than something to really consider.
But because Willis’ character was a copper, the theme of safety which verges on Terrorism was an understandable and rational idea; after the ... ...However, such attacks brought the surrogates into the public domain, briefly questioning just how safe the isolated folk in their virtual reality chairs were whilst locked away at home.
Can Bruce Willis save the day for humans – and robots – around the world or are all Surrogates destined to spell the end of life as people in less than a decade’s time know it?

Surrogates, great idea, poorly executed
Advantages: Intersting take on a new world, a twist here and there Disadvantages: Boring action sequences, predictable
I've always been a big fan of movies with cool and strange visions of the future and I love Bruce Willis. So when I heard about this film I was very intrigued. Unfortunately though, the old 'we're getting to smart for our own good' thing that's going on in a lot of futuristic movies is getting really old now. Oh, that and this movie is just boring. We're thrown into this world where everyone uses a robot replica of themselves (a surrogate) to go ... ...home. It was an interesting idea for a film, but when you realise that when anyone gets killed, they don't really die, it eliminates the suspense a lot of other films have. Also, I always wondered throughout the film why everyone wasn't fat. I mean, they get no exercise. Fortunately the plot helps with this as basically it revolves around Bruce Willis' character as a detective investigating into a murder (where one hasn't happened for years) and ...
