Going Ape

Advantages: Very good make-up and costumes, great twist at the end
Disadvantages: Not a film to be watched over and over

Planet of the Apes is a re-make of a previous film by the same name. I had only seen bits of the original film and I thought I knew what the story line was but with this remake it had been altered and brought up to date. The acting is pretty good, but it's hard to really enjoy it when you know in the back of your head that it's just actors and actresses prancing about in costume, but if you can look past that, the film can be enjoyable. Advantages: special effects, characters, storyline
Disadvantages: none

The beginning of the film still leaves me breathless, the visuals used when showing the ship spiralling out of control towards the planets surface as various compartments of the ship were being jettisoned are fantastic, the camera shaking violently, the speakers pushing out oodles of atmospheric noise to put us right in the middle of the crashing ship. Keep your clothes WITH YOU at all times

Advantages: One of the best ever sci-fi scripts
Disadvantages: Don't look at the ape masks at the back of the scenes!

I think that I was very affected by films as a child. For many of my early years I had a recurring nightmare of being chased through a corn field by marauding gorillas....it was horrible. I can now recognise that this was all due to watching this amazing film at such an early age. Considering this film was made in 1968 it was very well made indeed and stands the test of time well.
