The Day the Earth Caught Fire

Advantages: Enjoyable Sci-Fi romp
Disadvantages: None

The Day the Earth Caught Fire Thanks to the United States and the Soviet Union the earths orbit has been catastrophically changed. They simultaneously detonated 'H' bombs and now the Earth is headed straight into the sun. And this is how the film opens! At first the government deny everything but soon it's impossible to cover things up and then the panic and the anarchy start. We follow event from a newspaper hacks point ...
...and ends up in the thick of the action. The only way to save the Earth is to detonate 2 more bombs and try to restore the Earths orbit. Yeah I know the science doesn't hang together but this was filmed in the 60's. The special effects are minimum but that was fine because the acting and the plot speed more than made up for it. Filmed in black and white and to be honest it was probably the better for it. Recommended to watch at least once. ...

A 1950s Xperiment

Advantages: a good history lesson in cinema
Disadvantages: a bit dated

The 1955 film 'The Quatermass Xperiment' was a huge success at the time. Based upon the 1953 BBC six part television series of a similar name, it is deemed to be one of the first British horror movies, and has been hugely influential. Part of its success was due to Hammer Films treating the film's science fiction content as horror - creating an atmosphere rather than just focussing on the story. Professor Bernard Quatermass is an American with a ...

This third crew member flees his nurses at his hospital, and goes on a bit of a rampage, absorbing others into himself and growing... Richard Wordsworth puts on a good performance as Victor Carroon, the changed astronaut. Although he doesn't say much, as he's only human for a small part of the film, you can see the anguish in ...

Something nasty in the countryside.

Advantages: The original and best.
Disadvantages: May be old fashioned to some.

...as the basis for the Quatermass II shown on television in 1955 and somewhat of the film "Invasion of the body snatchers" in 1956. This is the Hammer version filmed in 1957 from the original scripts but with some alterations, but more of that later. Plot details. Professor Quatermass is rather annoyed at London's refusal to finance his experimental rockets and his plans to colonise the moon. He becomes intrigued by some radar traces that appear ...
...in the character of Professor Quatermass as portrayed on TV and on film. On the film where he is portrayed by Brian Donlevey, Quatermass is portrayed as a rather arrogant, ruthless go-getter in the approved American manner. Please remember that it was hoped to sell this film into the American market. Nigel Kneale wrote Professor Quatermass as an essentially English professor. One who was prepared to place himself into danger and personally face danger. ...

Meet Darren. He's sixteen going on immortal.

Advantages: Some good casting, great special effects, entertaining storyline
Disadvantages: Too silly and unrealistic for my liking

But when a war breaks out between the vampires and their deadly counterparts, Darren must learn how to fight in order to save himself, his family and the vampire population. ~ Cast ~ Darren - Chris Massoglia Larten Crepsley - John Reilly Steve - Josh Hutcherson Mr Tiny - Michael Cerveris Rebecca - Jessica Carlson Evra the Snake Boy - Patrick Fugit Murlaugh ...
...completely ridiculous and so gave Cirque du Freak a watch. Unfortunately though, this one generally falls into the ridiculous category. The two young actors playing best friends Darren and Steve, who both become vampires, are the most natural actors in the film and manage to combine their normal teenage life at school with turning into an vampire very well. They both play very different characters with Darren being sensible and caring, more cautious ...

Ile be back and back and back...

Advantages: Better than I had hoped
Disadvantages: weak ending

...me. The original Terminator film wasn't the greatest action movie ever made but it certainly made Arnie. When he got the script for it he told his agent he would have to cancel his appearance at the 1983 Mr Universe competition because he had to do this "shi**y robot movie". How wrong he was. But he was up for T2, the superb sequel, quite simply the best science-fiction action movie ever made for me, not aged by one single day since its 1991 release. ...
