Review of Doctor Who - Series 1 Vol.2 DVD by
sparkymarky1973
Advantages: What a way to end this disc......
Disadvantages: The first two-parter is a little bit of a let-down both on aliens and plot...
Volume Two of Doctor Who's first re-imagined season opens up with The Doctor and Rose returning to earth after a supposed 12 hours have passed only for Rose to then discover that in actual fact 12 months have passed. Her mum thought something bad must have happened to her and Rose's boyfriend, Mickey, was allegedly taken into custody on suspicion of bumping her off!!! So begins the first two-parter of the series, entitled ALIENS OF LONDON, with Rose ... ...for this show, only The Doctor can save the day but this time around, he may need a little help from an unexpected source......
This episode and it's follow-up, WORLD WAR THREE, although not weak, are far from the strongest of stories this season. The Slitheen too are hardly scary and, with their comedic fart noises that they make when disguised as human, seem almost to be played just for laughs. They wouldn't look out of place in a kids show and ...

Doctor Who series 1
Review of Doctor Who - Series 1 - Complete (Box Set) by
blissman70
Advantages: Great viewing for all the family
Disadvantages: none
...long break since the last Doctor Who and bringing it back in the 21st century would always be a risk, but with all the modern special effects tricks available the new series should make interesting viewing.
*The first episode, Rose, sees the doctor (Christopher Eccleston) rescuing Rose (Billie Piper) from the dreaded shop dummies in a department store on their very first meeting.
The Doctor is on Earth hunting down an Alien creature, 'the Nestene', ... ...attack people in London the Doctor and Rose have to stop the earth being taken over by this thing.
As an opening episode it was well written with an easy to follow story line for the return of the Doctor. The minimal use of special effects making the episode more believable, the opening explosion very dramatic indeed.
The opening episode gently introduces the main characters, briefly explaining who and what each persons involvement in the show ...

Bring on the BAD WOLF
Review of Doctor Who - Series 1 Vol.4 DVD by
sparkymarky1973
Advantages: A very gripping and emotional end to a brilliantly imagined series....
Disadvantages: Did we REALLY need another episode with the Slitheen?
...0ne of the new, re-imagined DOCTOR WHO (and what a money-spinning idea that was- releasing the first season over seperate discs) comes to the dedicated fan not with a whimper but a big, explosive bang!! Finally the BAD WOLF storyline draws to a close (for now...) with the return of an old foe, one of the first mentions of something called TORCHWOOD (hmm....) and what some have come to regard as the worst episode of season one as an opener.....
BOOM ... ...small talk, Captain Jack, The Doctor and Rose are taking some all-too needed time-out when The Doctor sees a familiar face in the local paper; that of a member of the Slitheen family who managed to teleport herself away just before Downing Street was destroyed. Magaret Blaine, as she calls herself, has become mayoress of Cardiff and intends to use a nucleur meltdown at local power station, Blaidd Drwg (Bad Wolf in welsh), to escape the planet following ...

the doctor is IN
Review of Doctor Who - Series 1 Vol.1 DVD by
sparkymarky1973
Advantages: The best re-invention of a popular sci-fi series that there has ever been......
Disadvantages: None- this is as good as a new DOCTOR WHO show was ever going to get.....
...when I was a kid DOCTOR WHO was one of those programmes you just had to watch. My era started mid-way through the Tom Baker years and carried on through his next incarnation as Peter Davidson. During the Colin Baker/ Sylvester McCoy years, I strayed from the fold as stories got a little silly and the acting became a little over-the-top. Then The Doctor did what he does best. He disappeared from our screens destined possibly never to return......
... ...was announced to bring The Doctor back, with the help of American funding, and featuring Paul McCann in the next regeneration, the idea was met with much anticipation. Unfortunately the Americans never really got Doctor Who and to be fair, the movie pilot wasn't THAT good and so the idea never got recommissioned as more than a one-off.....
Which brings us to 2005..... Russell.T.Davies announced the return of The Doctor as you had never seen him ...

are you my mummy?
Review of Doctor Who - Series 1 Vol.3 DVD by
sparkymarky1973
Advantages: Three of the best episodes so far on one disc can't be bad
Disadvantages: A bit of a weak story to start them all off
...new, all singing and dancing Doctor Who and is probably the best of the collections so far in terms of episode content. Picking up where we left off with Adam Mitchell now invited onboard The Tardis, (they picked him up from Van Statten's doomed museum of space oddities-remember?) Rose and The Doctor travel far forward in the future in THE LONG GAME, easily the weakest episode on the disc, and arrive on Sattelite 5 where the media is all-consuming ... ...often proved tricky for The Doctor back in the past and now is no exception as Adam feels slightly jealous of Rose's affections for The Doctor and almost left out of the little in-jokes that they share between them. He also suffers from culture-shock from being flung into a strange situation and it is good to see an episode where it is made abundantly clear that travelling through time and space really isn't to everyone's tastes!! Adam goes off on ...
