Series 3 starts to solidify in the middle
Advantages: Great acting and writing Disadvantages: Episodes spoilt by the subplot context
...third series of the modern Doctor Who gives us 4 episodes, two of which are a double-episode tale involving the Doctor's long serving arch enemies, the Daleks. With the first three episodes having set the scene with the emergence of Martha Jones as the Doctor's new companion, I was read for some gritty episodes that the writers could get their teeth stuck into.
The Episodes
The first two episodes are Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks. ... ...but the second story. The Doctor and Martha return to the present, and they are on the verge of parting company when gets an invitation from her sister to the unveiling of Dr Lazarus' life changing experiment. Curious, the Doctor tags along, where the revelation of Lazarus' genetic modifier causes concern and unleashes a strange monstrosity. At the same time, someone has become curious about the Doctor, and has made contact with Martha's family for ...

A new companion emerges
Advantages: Great acting Disadvantages: Some weak episodes
...first episode back in 1963, Doctor Who has wowed audiences with its capacity to create something new with extreme imagination. The rebirth of Doctor Who in 2005 with Chrostopher Eccleston as the title role paved the way for a regeneration in the form of David Tennant. Billie Piper played Rose, the Doctor's travelling companion through the first and second series, but at the end of the second, she and the Doctor were separated permanently when she ... ...is training to become a doctor in a London hospital when the building suddenly finds itself transported to the moon. Amongst the patients is a man known only as the Doctor, and he gives Martha instructions which, although they sound preposterous, he insists will save them all. With the air inside the hospital running and the feared space police, the Judoon, running riot, trying to find alien criminals inside the hospital, Martha must act quickly ...

End of season 3 is a belter!
Advantages: Great storylines in a 3 parter Disadvantages: Disappointing ending
...installment of series 3 of Doctor Who does something we haven't seen before: it gives us a 3 part episode. This having been said, it is also the end of season finale, and as such it is going to be hard to review this disc without giving some of the plot away. So, if you are planning on watching this, be warned I may give away a little. It's necessary, I'm afraid.
Up until now in the third series, we have seen a mix of episodes in terms of quality. ... ...three is Utopia, with the Doctor and Martha being transported forward in time by the Tardis to the end of the universe, the year something trillion, something unimaginable to us. Upon landing, they find they have a stowaway - Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood, who has been searching for the Doctor ever since they parted company way back at the end of Series 1, when Christopher Eccleston was still the Doctor. Jack pauses briefly to flirt with Martha ...

Sontar-HA!
Advantages: price, episodes, talent Disadvantages: no features
I'm a massive Doctor Who fan, and as soon as the Series 4 volume 2 DVD came out, I rushed to the shops to buy it! The world of the Time lord himself has been captured on the disk, and as we enter a world where creatures are unexplainable and companions have such a fry attitude that we need extinguishers, the stories unravel, creating an atmosphere so tense than it could be cut with a knife...
The Doctor travels both back in time and to the future, ... ...poison. It's up to the Doctor and latest companion Donna Noble to solve the problem, but can they do it before the entire planet is smothered?
The third episode is the Doctor's Daughter. There's something quite special about this episode. The Doctor and Donna, now joined by old companion Martha Jones (who had been working for Torchwood and met up with the Sontaran troubles!), take a trip and end up discovering a 'human' creature created from the ...

Flawless set of episodes from the Doctor's team!
Advantages: Superb cast and crew performances Disadvantages: None really
...In this third disc, the Doctor and Martha have two more adventures, as we are treated to one of the better double episodes in Human Nature and The Family of Blood, and then one of the scariest ever in Blink. Seriously, don't watch this last one in the dark if you're even a little on edge by sci-fi!
The Episodes
Human Nature and The Family of Blood is the double episode. The Doctor and Martha are fleeing alien hunters from a distant planet, and ... ...1913 in England, where the Doctor takes up the position of a school master, with Martha as a maid. It's not long before the alien hunters, known as the Family, following the Doctor's trail, land in the same place and time, but are unable to find the Doctor. As they narrow down the hunt, putting everyone in the school and its surroundings in danger, Martha must decide whether to release the Doctor early or to wait until the Family have exacted their ...
