The definitive Alien collection
Advantages: Original and director's cut edition, flawless transfer, every extra you could want Disadvantages: None
Of all movie monsters, the Alien has to be my favourite and this box set is an esential for anyone who has seen and loved any or all of the four pure Alien movies (dsicounting the Alien/ Predator crossover genre).
Having been old enough to have seen the original Alien at the cinema I was pleased that the box set includes the original as well as the new updated and reditied versions of all four of the movies. There are also extras beyond belief and ... ...movies fear not. The redited Alien for example was lovingly crafted by original director Ridley Scott who correctly recognised that a modern cinema audience would find the original somewhat slow paced in places. He has also skillfully added back scenes removed from the original release which, on viewing, are essential to the plot and reveal new charater nuances and tensions that seemed strange and unexplained previously.
This set was expensive when ...

I said "empathise", not "be silly"!
Advantages: Great story, plentiful special features, good sound and picture quality AND Peter Davison! Disadvantages: Not quite as good as Pyramids of Mars!
Peter Davison is my favourite Doctor Who so far. With the new TV series looming fast, I thought it was time to review one of my favourite stories and favourite Doctors in celebration of this event. The DVD I will be reviewing is The Visitation ~ our copy came from www.sendit.com at the bargain price of £9.99, a saving of a tenner on the recommended retail price of £19.99 (it was £14.99 on Amazon).
Released by the BBC, this DVD was released on 19th ... ...This story sees the fifth Doctor (played by Peter Davison) and his companions, Nyssa, Tegan and Adric, landing in seventeenth century England during the time of the Plague. They are actually aiming for 20th Century Heathrow…but that’s another story! Faced with what at first glance is a typical rural historical scene (complete with villagers with pitchforks), it soon becomes apparent that something else is lurking in the woodshed (and there actually ...

Don't Panic
Advantages: Dares to evolve the idea at the risk of alienating older fans Disadvantages: The humour is not everyone's cup of tea
Review of the Movie The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a British science fiction institution and any attempt to add to it was always going to be controversial to its fans. Translating a story that works as a novel and a television series to a feature film is inevitably going to require changes. The film treads a thin line between trying to evolve the concept by bringing it to a new audience while still remaining true to the original concept, ... ...his best friend Ford escape the destruction of the planet Earth. It's a very english tradition to route for the underdog character and Arthur is as far away from your standard american hero as you can. The humour will likely polarise audiences. For those that do enjoy it, they'll find a more light hearted and streamlined set of gags to enjoy. Every now and again we get a humorous animated section from the guide, voiced by Stephen Fry who was an excellent ...

You Look Like a Radioactive Tampon
Advantages: Great Direction and Acting Disadvantages: Too Slow for some
Moon reminds me a lot of those big weighty Sci-fi films of the seventies where it was all about atmosphere, storyline and your imagination rather than riotous special effects and wise cracking aliens. This film is utterly beguiling, its tense but strangely relaxing, all of these is down to two men, the director Duncan Jones and the star Sam Rockwell. This is Jones' first feature film and its an incredibly impressive debut, he eschewed using his father ... ...it is a really fantastic film which is a credit to him. Starring Sam Rockwell as Sam, the only worker on an automated lunar mining complex. He has been working on his own for nearly three years and nearing the end of his term in space he feels lonely, isolated and confused....as anyone would, I imagine. With only a droid, Gerty (Voiced by Kevin Spacey) for company, Sam is alone and starts to feel a world apart from Earth, he feels he is alone but ...
