Advantages: special effects, characters, storyline

A poor man's 2001: A Space Odyessy

Advantages: Slick camera work!
Disadvantages: Poor script, poor acting, very bad score and a poor finale!

...The main problem with Mission to Mars is De Palma thinks its a much more important film than what it really is. By concentrating on building up towards the 2001 like resolution ending (which isn't worth it at all, one of the most pathetic and limp endings ever) De Palma forgets to engage the audience with the characters of the film. Advantages: A bit of an overlooked minor classic
Disadvantages: Feels like it could have been better

Spectacular visuals (the ice field, in particular, is stunning) weren't enough to guarantee success for this expensive project that saw the end of 20th Century-Fox's attempt at prestige animation before it had even really begun.
