X-Men
Advantages: A very good movie Disadvantages: none
...idea of humans evolving into X-men is not, certainly, an unrealistic one, given the fact that we humans do have a long history of evolution. The movie starts by bringing us back to the Holocaust era, when Magneto first shows us a first hint of his powers, of his capacities to manipulate metals. It also gives us a fine insight of some of the series most important subjects, like Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, and Professor Xavier. This is only the first ...

All Pitch In
Advantages: special effects, characters, storyline Disadvantages: none
...begins the spectacle that is Pitch Black.
The beginning of the film still leaves me breathless, the visuals used when showing the ship spiralling out of control towards the planets surface as various compartments of the ship were being jettisoned are fantastic, the camera shaking violently, the speakers pushing out oodles of atmospheric noise to put us right in the middle of the crashing ship. You are willing the people on board to survive what ... ...often lost on film makers. Pitch Black is really the film that launched Vin Diesel's career (even though he was in Saving Private Ryan, who remembers him for that?), and for me it is still his best outing. And what a first outing it is. Riddick is one mean hombre, a murderer who is being taken back to the slam after escaping, he is brutal, he is tough and he is dangerous but as we see in the film he is not totally devoid of humanity, but even then ...

A poor man's 2001: A Space Odyessy
Advantages: Slick camera work! Disadvantages: Poor script, poor acting, very bad score and a poor finale!
...The main problem with Mission to Mars is De Palma thinks its a much more important film than what it really is. By concentrating on building up towards the 2001 like resolution ending (which isn't worth it at all, one of the most pathetic and limp endings ever) De Palma forgets to engage the audience with the characters of the film. This can be seen by the way normally good actors seem particularly dis-interested. Tim Robbins seems bemused by the ... ...script. Suffice to say there is little to save this film - sure their are some great shots scattered about which reminds viewers of De Palma's fantastic visual eye, but without a decent script, a ludicrous ending pretending to be as influential as 2001 was, poor CGI, one of the worst scores Ennio Moriconne has ever produced and a lack of characterisation in the central players - this is by far and away one of the worst films ever made. Avoid! ...

Man! Everybody else used "Bob" in their title :(
Advantages: A bit of an overlooked minor classic Disadvantages: Feels like it could have been better
Spectacular visuals (the ice field, in particular, is stunning) weren't enough to guarantee success for this expensive project that saw the end of 20th Century-Fox's attempt at prestige animation before it had even really begun. Shame, as this is approaching a minor classic and may be the closest Hollywood animation ever got to live-action presentation. If you like anime, science-fiction, action or animation in general, this is for you.

You wish there'd only been one
Advantages: none Disadvantages: so bad its good in places
...movie franchise to the tv Highlander Universe and nothing more. Don't ask what plot is about because there really isn't one as far as I can tell, the movie seems to exist solely to debunk most of the already established ideas behind Highlander and its previous sequals. The Highlander franchise name is sullied once more with another non-canon film, screwing with already established ideas and rules. Duncan McCloud? A clan ends up with more than 1 immortal. ... ...1st Highlander film where the various immortals came from for The Gathering. Then Kell? Who comes from the same village as Conner McCloud? 3 immortals in 1 village? How likely are the odds of that then? So we see Racheal from Highlander get killed in a trap by Kell designed to kill Conner. Conner willing gives his life to allow Duncan to face Kell. The "No Fighting On Hallowed Ground" rule is blatantly ignored. This film, I have no idea where it's ...
