Star Trek 6: rediscovering the basics!

Advantages: Great Entertainment
Disadvantages: Too many shakspearian references

My reviews of the Star Trek movies continue with this brilliant instalment which see's a further change in direction which you can feel to an even greater extent than was apparent in the transition from Star Trek IV to Star Trek V. Clearly having suffered the indignation of a comparatively unsuccessful movie that was Star Trek V, Paramount have decided to "come home" by re-introducing Nicholas Meyer as the director of this Cold War of the future ...
...Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and a fine job he did too. He's well and truly back and every scene has his name written all over it. The plot of this film relates to the breaking down of barriers between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. But its more than that, it's a struggle for survival for the Klingons, a struggle to forgive for Captain James T. Kirk who's son's life was taken by a Klingon in Star Trek III: The Search ...

Highlander sequel fails to wow

Advantages: Good handling of a mediochre script
Disadvantages: Script and constant darkness

Highlander II: The Quickening is the 1991 sequel to the 1986 film Highlander, which pitted immortal Connor MacLeod against an evil immortal at an event known as the Gathering. Director Russell Mulcahy returns for the sequel, as does Christopher Lambert as MacLeod. The film was less successful than the first, with a rather dubious and other-worldly plot and a low level of special effects reducing it to a more cult status than a commercial success. ...
...who was a fan of Highlander is likely to enjoy it, although perhaps not as much as the first film. There are elements of genius, and Lambert's portrayal of an immortal wishing he was mortal is very good, although this doesn;t make for very exciting viewing. In conclusion, this is a well made film which has some dodgy parts and perhaps wasn't handled with an overall audience in mind. It is definitely targeted as those who enjoyed the first film. ...

The TOS Crew Signs Off...

Advantages: Relevant Plot, Great Performances, Excellent Special Effects
Disadvantages: Betrays some Trek Values

Star Trek The Undiscovered Country marks the final voyage of the entire TOS crew in the Star Trek franchise. The movie originally premiered in 1992, when the memory of the Cold War and the fall of the USSR was still quite vivid in the minds of many people. It is from this time that the Undiscovered Country was produced, and as you watch the movie you can draw many, many parallels between the US/USSR and the Federation/Klingons. And as fans know, ...
...The story is a Star Trek spin on the classic whodunnit genre, while still feeling fresh as it is set in space with a more epic nature as peace between two vast interstellar empires is at stake. The Klingons want to make peace with the Federation to end decades of hostility. Unfortunately, there are those out there that do not want this hostility to end and they try to frame Kirk and McCoy for the murder of a Klingon ambassador. I will not give out ...

End Of An Era! All Change......

Advantages: An even numbered classic adventure.
Disadvantages: Last film of the original crew.

...total lunacy of the fifth Star Trek film released in 1989, the sixth film in the franchise had to be something different and also had to be something special, given the fact that this would be the last time the crew of the USS Enterprise would be together on-screen. Released in early 1992 in Europe, the film centres on the Klingons. It has been discovered by the USS Excelsior that he Klingon moon of Praxis has been destroyed by an internal explosion ...
...by Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall, she plays a tolerant officer who Spock believes has the calibre to replace him as Captain of the Enterprise one day. The character is fleshed out with a decent back-story as well which is raised in conversation in the early part of the film. Cattrall does play the part well and has the Vulcan method of delivery down pat, she also manages to deliver the Vulcan eyebrow raise with perfect timing! The victim of ...

Sometimes, Ignorance is bliss

Advantages: clever thriller, good story, well acted
Disadvantages: bit depressing?

Dont misunderstand my review title, this is a cracking film. You can nearly always say that about Nicolas Cage films, but this one really is! The premise is simple. There are many disasters happening on earth, for some reason, aliens decide to warn mankind about the upcoming disasters by "whispering" them to a little girl in the 1950's. Unfortuneately, that girl does nothing with the information other than write it down on a bit of paper and allow ...
...capsule. The capsule is dug up in the current day and discovered by Nicolas Cage's character. He soon discovers the code in the series of numbers written on the page and works out that the code tells of impending disasters, when they will happen, how many will die and the location. The story continues on along this path, with a worrying fortelling of the end of days. We don't know what will happen right until the end. I wont ruin it for you either, ...
