Legend - Tom Cruise Versus The Lord of Darkness
Advantages: Wonderful fantasy tale, good standard of acting Disadvantages: Despite PG certificate, may scare little ones
This fantasy adventure, written by William Hjortsberg and directed by Ridley Scott, stars a young Tom Cruise as a boy named Jack. Set in a mythical forest which is inhabited by more than just ordinary animals, creatures such as fairies and unicorns, Jack is forced to confront the Lord of Darkness (Tim Curry - best known from The Rocky Horror Picture Show), when his beloved princess Lily (Mia Sara) is taken by goblins, and the world is plunged into ... ...small group of forest creatures - gnomes and fairy folk - Jack must rescue Lily and the last remaining unicorn before the Lord of Darkness carries out the sacrifice that will seal the worlds' doom. THE OVERVIEW: This is one of Tom Cruise's earliest films, (film was released in 1985), and is probably one of his best. This film is visually stunning thanks to the directing of Ridley Scott. The mythical forest in which the film is set is outstanding. ...

Naked Life Suckers from Outer Space
Advantages: Mathilda May when naked (pretty much the whole time) Disadvantages: FX quality is inconsistent
...must in turn suck the lifeforce from another human every 2 hours or die. If this progression is not stopped, earth is doomed. Meanwhile, in Texas, the Churchill's escape pod is found with Carlson still alive. He tells a story of the crew being drained one by one, culminating with Carlson setting afire the shuttle cabin and escaping in the pod. Under hypnosis, Carlson reveals mental contact with the spacegirl. Carlson and Doctor Cane trace her to ... ...for the insane in Yorkshire however this was only a ruse to lead them away from London. In fact, London is in shambles. The two male aliens have escaped and been 'feasting' on Londoners. Fallada kills one of them with a lead shaft through his energy center 2 inches below the heart and theorizes that these are vampires, perhaps the vampires of legend, having visited earth once before. The story would have been fine, but I had three major quibbles. ...

A Lighthearted Family Movie
Advantages: see review Disadvantages: see review
Directed by Ron Howard, Cocoon is a light-hearted sci-fi comedy which although quite watchable, also inexplicably garnered two major awards. An Academy Award for its special effects and an Oscar or Don Ameche in the role of best supporting actor. Perhaps 1985 was a pretty grim year for movies...or perhaps I am just far too cynical and this movie is far better than how it appears on the surface. The basic storyline is an update to the fountain of ... ...roles and letting them refind their lost youth and exuberance. How? Well a couple of aliens land on the Earth with a purpose. They rent a large house with an indoor pool deep in the heart of St. Petersburg, Florida(like the human equivalent of the elephant's graveyard in the US so I'm told lol) and set off to look for something in the ocean. Whilst they are gone, a feisty bunch of old folks from the local rest home use the pool for their midnight ...

Twice the Adventure
Advantages: Jamie, good plot, great acting, excellent characters Disadvantages: None
I'm a Doctor Who fan. I have been since I was little. I remember hiding behind the sofa the very first time the Daleks climbed the stairs! While I like the new series, the old series will forever hold a place in my affections. For those who've somehow missed the phenomenon, Dr Who is the story of an alien known only as The Doctor. He travels around space and time in his machine, known as the TARDIS, which takes the shape of a police box and is larger ... ...they're robots. The Doctor also has the ability to change his entire physical appearance and personality. When he is about to die, he regenerates, which essentially means that the BBC hire a new actor to play the role. That may sound like a bit of a cheat, but it's come to work extremely well for them. The Two Doctors is a story involving the meeting of two different regenerations of the Doctor. There had been previous team ups, The Three Doctors ...
