The best of the best

Advantages: Ground breaking special effects
Disadvantages: It had to end... I was gutted!

...think this is the best Star Trek film ever made? Why can I still remember most of the words to the film? Why would I recommend this film to you without reservation....read on! 1. This is an excellent example of a tv series to movie cross over. The readmission of a character from the original series was a genius move. 2. We see the Enterprise going to warp in two different ways, the latter paving the way for future warp speeds! 3. The crew have great ...
...his trust for all things Star Fleet, I cannot tell you how many times I have shouted at the screen ' just raise your shields NOW!!!' 6. We get to see GENESIS and it is great to see that we have the scientific know how to develop such a device, particularly when all we have seen of the future tech is a range of colourful screens and buttons - this can actually make a planet habitable! 7. This film employed amazing CGI work - It is rumoured that the ...

THE JOURNEY OF JEN

Advantages: It's a mysterious, magical fantasy
Disadvantages: It is actually creepy in parts!

The Dark Crystal - Collectors Edition. I loved this film as a child. I remember being both intrigued and fascinated by the elf-like fantasy, and also scared and left a little confused from the creepy skeksis! I have this on video and it was by strange coincidence I was chatting to someone about the film, so imagine my delight when I picked the Special Collectors Edition up from ASDA at £5.67. Yes, it really was that low! #Background The film ...
...follows closely to a mythical, dark storyline where there is a fantastical journey to save the land from evil. The film involves adventure, friendship, trust, loyalty, bravery, and fantasy-fiction. The film is rated PG and runs approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Even though the film involves puppets I must issue a caution for there are some small creepy parts. There is a warning on the DVD case: "contains mild horror". The films released under ...

"So we meet again, Doctor..."

Advantages: A fast moving Doctor Who jaunt
Disadvantages: A bit dated

In Doctor Who standards Earthshock certainly was a shock. Some state that Earthshock is horrifically flawed, however to a Doctor Who newcomer Earthshock is a fantastic entry level story. From Earthshock onwards nothing should come as a surprise. The Doctor (Peter Davison) arrives on Earth sometime in the future with his three faithful companions Adric, Nyssa and Tegan. Some serious tension is present in the Tardis. Adric has had a falling out with ...
...Doctor if he can be returned to his own place and time in the universe. After some debate the Doctor agrees, but insists that he first investigates why they have arrived on Earth. The Tardis picked up a signal coming from deep underground the Earths surface. On the surface of the planet there is also some considerable tension, a group of scientists looking at rock under the Earth's surface have disappeared. Only one member of the team had survived ...

The Wrath of Khan

Advantages: It has humour and humanity
Disadvantages: None that I can think of

...---------------- Rel eased in 1982, STAR TREK II - THE WRATH OF KHAN is a sequel to both STAR TREK - THE MOTION PICTURE (released in 1979), and the episode 'Space Seed' from the first season of the original TV show STAR TREK. The first movie had not been well received by the critics, although it did quite well at the box office. Unfortunately its gross was not good enough for the studio in comparison for its budget so with the second movie they ...
...-------------------------------- THE DIRECTOR -------------------------------- STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN was directed by Nicholas Meyer, who also contributed to the writing of the script. Meyer would later return to the STAR TREK fold as writer of the 4th movie, and writer/director of the 6th. ------------------------------------------ MY VIEWS ON THE FILM ------------------------------------------ The slow moving STAR TREK: THE MOTION ...

Kill your television

Advantages: Stylish, intelligent, creepy
Disadvantages: None that I can see

...sexually excited by automobile accidents. Videodrome is no less strange, or disturbing than that film. Videodrome is the strangest, and most socially relevant of his films. It is a surreal journey through the world of underground TV, and pirate video. Max Renn (James Woods) runs a channel 83, a small but aggressive independent TV station. They specialize in soft core sex, and hardcore violence. Max is a bottom feeder. He seeks out the worst, most ...
...a scrambled satellite channel. Videodrome is an hour long program in which nameless people are tortured and murdered by men in black rubber suits. No plot, no characters, just violence and death. Videodrome is snuff video. Max and Nikki are both excited by the program. Max wants to broadcast it. Nikki is turned on by it. "It aint exactly sex", Max tells her. She thinks it is, sex in a dark, dirty way that appeals to the unevolved reptilian brain. ...
