The outsider

Advantages: Surprisingly watchable, David Bowie is beautiful to watch
Disadvantages: Just that sci fi isn't my usual cup of tea

...who comes to Earth in the hope that he can save his rapidly deteriorating planet and his family. Having arrived with nothing, he quickly builds up his finances and soon becomes a wealthy businessman, able to do anything he wants. He becomes accustomed to earthly pleasures, especially drink and sex with his lover, Mary-Lou, but his plan is still to go back home at some point. There are those that have other ideas though. It soon becomes clear to the ...
...if I possibly can. However, the combination of director Nicholas Roeg, responsible for Walkabout, one of my favourite films, and David Bowie, my all time favourite musician, was a little too tempting to turn down. David Bowie isn't exactly known for his acting skills - he has received very mixed opinions about his acting career - but I thought he was great in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and, if nothing else, I at least had the opportunity to look ...

Good Bye Sarah Jane Smith!

Advantages: Brilliant story, and informative documantrary.
Disadvantages: The documantary goes off topic.

...Eldrad, is outstanding, considering that Doctor Who during this time wasn’t known for its believable aliens. I was under the naïve impression that it was only the new series which handled the drama of travelling and leaving the Doctor properly, how wrong I was. The last scene, in the final (fourth) part of the story, shared between the Doctor and Sarah Jane is both sad and touching, and it just shows why they are the most popular team among fans. ...
...to forget about Elizabeth Sladen. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but, this documentary is about Sladen, and surely they would discuss the replacement of Jon Pertwee in “The Planet of Spiders” DVD, but it is interesting none-the-less. Overall, it is a must buy for all Doctor Who fans! ...

Victor Who?

Advantages: Still fun to watch
Disadvantages: A bit dated

SPACE 1999 = Here we are again with another memorable sci-fi series from Gerry and Sylvia Anderson whose other 'Hits' included Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Fireball XL5, Thunderbirds and UFO. Space 1999 was set on the Moon where a Moon base has been built and nuclear waste from the Earth was stored, but things are not well and soon the nuclear waste explodes blowing the moon out of earths orbit and sets it on a course out of the ...
...alive the Alpha moon base as the travel around the universe and as they meet many strange aliens and come across other civilizations and weird planets. The program aired from 1975 - 1977 and actually only lasted for 2 series but with 24 episodes in each series it seemed to go on for a lot longer. The crew consisted of some well known faces and made house hold name of some originally unknown actors. Chief cast; Martin Landau as Commander ...

Newton falls and Bowie rises as an actor

Advantages: David Bowie as an alien, surreal and unusual
Disadvantages: Dated special effects, too many improbabilities

The Science fiction film, The Man Who Fell to Earth, was made in 1976 when David Bowie, playing the title role, was at the peak of his popularity . His image as the glam rocker, Ziggy Stardust, was well established and had inspired a cult following. This film was to be his debut into the world of acting. The film opens as a rocket is launched into space. As it rises, something descends to earth landing very conveniently in a lake. A UFO? The solo ...
...almost white face exaggerated by the redness of his hair is framed by the night sky. Newton’s mission is simple. His home planet, Anthea, is in desperate need of water. His wife and two children are slowly dying of thirst. Newton has to make sufficient money to build a spaceship that can take him back with enough water to rescue his planet and his people. He enters the town of Haneyville where he pawns his wedding ring to get money. From this small ...

Ta, Ta Sarah Jane.

Advantages: Fast moving story and quality acting.
Disadvantages: Liz Sladen's Andy Pandy dungarees!!

Doctor Who and the Hand of Fear, was one of the stronger stories that formed the early part of Tom Baker's internship. This four parter fairly bowls along, from the moment the Tardis lands in a Quarry that is blown up. Sarah Jane is buried in the rubble. When she is found, she is holding onto a fossilised hand. The hand, which is part of a larger being has mind control powers and takes command of Sarah Jane, forcing her to go to a nuclear power station ...
...forced to travel to the creature's home planet in an attempt to save Sarah Jane and of course the universe as a whole. More important than this story, is that it was a pivotal moment in Dr Who history, as this was Sarah Jane's last story. The Dr had to return her to Earth, as he had been summoned to Gallifrey his home world by an emergency call. He could only travel alone, as outsiders are not welcomed on the planet. This then became the first companion ...
