SPACE 1999

Advantages: Fun Sci-Fi
Disadvantages: Quite dated

SPACE 1999 = Here we are again with another memorable sci-fi series from Gerry and Sylvia Anderson whose other 'Hits' included Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons, Fireball XL5, Thunderbirds and UFO. Space 1999 was set on the Moon where a Moon base has been built and nuclear waste from the Earth was stored, but things are not well and soon the nuclear waste explodes blowing the moon out of earths orbit and sets it on a course out of the ...

The Testament Of Arkadia I remember as a kid having a toy ‘Eagle’ and really enjoying each episode. You can get it on DVD or catch the repeats on ITV4, daily. At the time the sets where clever and innovative and the scripts fresh and different. The special effects where not up to much but then it was 1975, oops sorry, 1999. The acting ...

Pyramids of Mars

Advantages: Tom Baker as The Doctor
Disadvantages: None

...The plot has The Doctor and Sarah Jane materialising in the TARDIS in 1911 where they find an Egyptologist known as Marcus Scarman, who has been possessed by the last survivor of the Osirans, Sutekh. Sutekh has been imprisoned inside a pyramid in Egypt and has got Scarman to construct robots, who in turn are to create a missile to destroy the pyramid. The Doctor has to try to stop this, but this is only the start of his problems. One of the most ...
...the BBC for releasing these Doctor Who stories in their original, episodic, version. In the days of VHS video they tended to turn the stories into 'omnibus' editions, effectively making them one long story with no interruptions for credits. This did a real disservice to the programme as when done right, as with this story, the cliffhangers can be really good. Of course in the 'omnibus' format the cliffhanger is done away with as the next shot follows ...

Sontarans, just want to be loved.

Advantages: Strong story and excellent pace.
Disadvantages: None.

This lovely 2 parter immediately precedes the greatest Dr Who story ever, 'Genesis of The Daleks'. It takes place on an allegedly abandoned earth in the future. But the Dr , Sarah and Harry stumble across some shipwrecked colonists, who one by one are being dispatched in ever more lethal tests, by a lone Sontaran, who are hell bent on taking over this part of the galaxy, as they continue their never ending war against the Rutans. This is a fast paced ...
...is really well acted, particularly by Elizabeth Sladen, as she becomes the victim of the Sontaran experiments. Although there are some obvious scenes where the Dr is played by the stuntman, this can be excused, as Tom Baker suffered a serious shoulder injury during filming. But overall this is a delightful little story. The extras again are good value. There is the usual cast commentary and interesting facts, plus a lovely photo gallery, which has ...

...The series then follows the crew left alive the Alpha moon base as the travel around the universe and as they meet many strange aliens and come across other civilizations and weird planets. The program aired from 1975 - 1977 and actually only lasted for 2 series but with 24 episodes in each series it seemed to go on for a lot longer. The crew consisted of some well known faces and made house hold name of some originally unknown actors. Chief cast; ...

A Legacy

Advantages: One of the most influential shows of all time
Disadvantages: None

...starting year of 1975, The Survivors was a very British drama. At the time science fiction and horror drama was rife, the viewers pretty much demanded it. The Survivors was a tale of the end of days; a genetic scientist brings the world to a sudden stop by causing the spread of a flu like illness, which he unknowingly spread across the planet whilst trying to promote greener practises (ironically an issue so strong in our minds now but never addressed ...

On their way they make great friends, become part of new communities, a engage in a sort of historical warfare with Arthur Wormley (Played by Inspector Wexford star George Baker) a man who has dreams of rebuilding the country by first rebuilding parliament. The Survivors is probably the inspiration ...
