Solaris
Advantages: Rewards repeat viewings Disadvantages: None
...it must be emphasised that Solaris probably isn't everyone's cup of tea and if you were born after 1980 you may think this is the slowest film ever made. Yet have patience and you will be rewarded with one of the most enigmatic endings in cinema history. Remade in 2002 as a vanity project for George Clooney, which shows great taste on his part but lacks the haunting quality of the original. ...

NIGHT OF THE BIG HEAT - GREAT SCI-FI
Advantages: Great cast, director and plot Disadvantages: A little dated
...film of the seventies. The Night Of The Big Heat was also the last film in which Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and the director Terence Fisher worked together. The film was directed by Terence Fisher (The Devil Rides Out & Island Of Terror) and was the main director used by Hammer Films, and directed upwards of thirty films before his death in 1980.
The Story...
On the remote Island of Fara, a freak heat wave hits, and sends the temperatures sky ... ...explain the heat either. Meanwhile a novelist Jeffrey Callum (Patrick Allen) who is on the Island and living in the local pub, becomes entangled between the landlady and his former mistress Angela Roberts (Jane Merrow), which sends the temperature even higher, giving the film a romantic under tone as well.
A mysterious lodger at the pub a Godfrey Hanson (Christopher Lee) is soon noticed by the landlady and Callum as his behaviour is 'odd' as he ...

Vonneguts masterwork
Advantages: Classic S/F Disadvantages: It's completely bonkers!
Take Billy Pilgrim, our hero. And take him on a trip along his life. Travelling in time. OK, so we're in the realms of science fiction and we're staying there. The majority of Pilgrims travels we get to see are parts of his life when he was a GI who was captured during World War 2.
He's unlucky enough to get sent to Dresden and be there when it got bombed by the allies. (If it had nothing military there, WHY were they bombing it?). You get to see ... ...of his own death.
He's also abducted by sex obsessed aliens who just want to watch him mating. I haven't read the book so I can't compare the 2 but the film is good, It kept me glued to the story all the way through. Well worth a look. ...

Improved for DVD
Advantages: It's available for a bargain price and it's littered with extras Disadvantages: William Hartnell (the First Doctor) isn't in it very much
...in 1973. Jon Pertwee was Doctor at the time and this reunited the show with its original Doctor (Hartnell) and second Doctor (Patrick Troughton).
William Hartnell was ill at the time of filming with arteriosclerosis, and that is the reason you do not see much of him in the story. But do not let that put you off. This is still a very entertaining story with 3 loveable performances from the Doctors - especially scenes which sees Troughton and Pertwee's ... ...are too devious for one Doctor alone to fight, and that's where the others come in. In its day this was one extremely ambitious story as it required far too many special effects. But somehow they pulled it off! And the restoration team have ensured it stands up on DVD today.
The extras will appeal to anyone. And even if you already own the story on video and aren't convinced about upgrading to DVD, the extras really do make it worth your while. ...

You Look Like a Radioactive Tampon
Advantages: Great Direction and Acting Disadvantages: Too Slow for some
Moon reminds me a lot of those big weighty Sci-fi films of the seventies where it was all about atmosphere, storyline and your imagination rather than riotous special effects and wise cracking aliens. This film is utterly beguiling, its tense but strangely relaxing, all of these is down to two men, the director Duncan Jones and the star Sam Rockwell. This is Jones' first feature film and its an incredibly impressive debut, he eschewed using his father ... ...it is a really fantastic film which is a credit to him. Starring Sam Rockwell as Sam, the only worker on an automated lunar mining complex. He has been working on his own for nearly three years and nearing the end of his term in space he feels lonely, isolated and confused....as anyone would, I imagine. With only a droid, Gerty (Voiced by Kevin Spacey) for company, Sam is alone and starts to feel a world apart from Earth, he feels he is alone but ...
