2001: A Space Odyssey review
Advantages: Fascinating, thought-provoking, fantastic use of music Disadvantages: None
2001: A Space Odyssey is a sci-fi film made in 1968, directed by Stanley Kubrick and written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke.
One of the recurring themes in this film is evolution. The first 30 mins or so have no dialogue at all, and focus on a very distant point in our past, when a group of herbivore apes are attacked, and one is killed, by a leopard. They are also driven from their water hole by another tribe, so they sleep in a rock crater overnight. ... ...monolith has appeared in front of them. They are very curious as to what this is, and one of them touches it. Not long after, this particular ape remembers the monolith and realises he can use a bone as a weapon to defend himself. So they go back and kill the tribe that took over their water hole and, jubilant, the aforementioned ape throws his bone in the air. This leads to one of the best cuts I've ever seen, when we see the bone flying through ...

Keep your clothes WITH YOU at all times
Advantages: One of the best ever sci-fi scripts Disadvantages: Don't look at the ape masks at the back of the scenes!
I think that I was very affected by films as a child. For many of my early years I had a recurring nightmare of being chased through a corn field by marauding gorillas....it was horrible. I can now recognise that this was all due to watching this amazing film at such an early age. Considering this film was made in 1968 it was very well made indeed and stands the test of time well. Ok...so some of the ape masks (particularly in the background) are ... ...sequence of this great film I really loved. I really enjoy space craft of any kind and the ship they have travelled in is reminiscent of the late and great concorde...all pointy and fast looking. What I love more about this film than anything is the number of times Charlton Heston tries to escape, but he is always caught...learn your lesson! The scenes, just prior to the famous words said in the net are great. I don't know how I would feel running ...

Making History
Advantages: A really great family movie Disadvantages: None
...match up to the original Planet Of The Apes (1967), it handled social topics, cultural and religious issues, as well as creating the largest special effects spectacular the world had ever seen. Now in its 40th year Planet Of The Apes still manages to provide a stir of controversy while still looking clean and crisp; and most importantly despite the massive improvements in special effects make up, Planet Of The Apes still offers convincing looking ... ...des singes translated Monkey Planet; Planet Of The apes caused its makers many sleepless nights in the making. Initially they could not find anyone who wanted to get involved in the movie. But the casting of Hollywood legend Charlton Heston in his most energetic role as astronaut Taylor soon swung the winds of change into the film-makers direction. Suddenly everyone wanted a hand, in what was going to prove to be the most difficult movie to make ...

A weak episode of Doctor who
Advantages: A great story and a level of entertainment Disadvantages: music, special effects, acting.
Doctor Who, The Seeds Of Death was one of the last episodes of Doctor Who starring Patrick Troughton and I have to say, this was one of the more boring episodes of Doctor Who.
The story starts when contact is lost with the T-mat station on the moon. T-mat is a teleporter which allows anyone to travel where ever they want on earth. The T-mat is also used to transport food and i mportant materials around the world. And there is no way to reach the ... ...But he has encountered the Doctor and his companions who have landed in his museum. The man is soon visited by the T-mat company and the Doctor becomes one of there supervises and eventually he and his companions are the only personal who can fly the rocket to the moon. But on the moon, a warrior race known as the Ice warriors have captured the T-mat station and are planning to invade Earth. But can the Doctor save the day?
The story for this episode ...

The Doctor saves the day again!
Advantages: Classic story, wonderfully acted. Disadvantages: Dodgy 60's catsuit!
...all the elements of a Doctor Who legend, Unit, Cybermen and the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) in sparkling form. A very good storyline, well acted and with a good menacing soundtrack, but like so many stories in the 60's, a little too long. This doesn't deter too much from the fact that we are seeing Troughton at is best as the Doctor and Jamie, (Frazer Hines), is also on top form. Zoe, was just a woman in a catsuit really!
The story itself centres ... ...supplier of electronic equipment. The Doctor is forced to team up with UNIT, headed by the recently promoted Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart to thwart the invasion.
This was one of the stories which unfortunatley is not complete, as episodes 1 and 4 are missing. These have been beautifully rendered in cartoon form and add to the timielessness of the story.
Once again, this DVD does not disapoint in the extras department, as not only is there ...
