A Space Odyssey
Review of 2001 - A Space Odyssey DVD by
phurren2006
Advantages: Excellent storyline, brilliant effects
Disadvantages: It's loooooooooooooong
In the mid-1960s Stanley Kubrick wanted to make a science-fiction movie which would deal with the space exploration and the prospect of the existence of extra-terrestrials. He had previously made the satirical DR. STRANGELOVE, which with its theme of nuclear destruction skirted the genre. Here however, working with the acclaimed science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, Kubrick came up with the science-fiction classic 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. The film ... ...science-fiction film ever made, whereas others end up baffled and bored.
The movie is divided up into four episodes. The first is set millions of years in the past. The second is set at the start of the 21st Century and follows a journey to the moon during which Dr Heywood Floyd visits an excavation which has uncovered an alien artefact which has been buried for a very long time. The third episode moves the story forward by 18 months and follows ...

A weak episode of Doctor who
Review of Doctor Who - The Seeds Of Death DVD by
seadevil
Advantages: A great story and a level of entertainment
Disadvantages: music, special effects, acting.
Doctor Who, The Seeds Of Death was one of the last episodes of Doctor Who starring Patrick Troughton and I have to say, this was one of the more boring episodes of Doctor Who.
The story starts when contact is lost with the T-mat station on the moon. T-mat is a teleporter which allows anyone to travel where ever they want on earth. The T-mat is also used to transport food and i mportant materials around the world. And there is no way to reach the ... ...But he has encountered the Doctor and his companions who have landed in his museum. The man is soon visited by the T-mat company and the Doctor becomes one of there supervises and eventually he and his companions are the only personal who can fly the rocket to the moon. But on the moon, a warrior race known as the Ice warriors have captured the T-mat station and are planning to invade Earth. But can the Doctor save the day?
The story for this episode ...

You be a monkey's uncle to miss this.
Review of Planet Of The Apes (Wide Screen) by
oldgoth
Advantages: You get to watch a great film
Disadvantages: none
...This is the case with Planet of the Apes, 1968 version I am reviewing here, while the remake not a bad film, it not a patch on the original film.
Storyline and cast.
The original was released in 1968, and set new standards in make-up at the time, and still impressive today. The film won two Oscars at the time, for Best Costume Design by Morton Haack and Best Music, Original Score for a Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith. Screenplay by Michael Wilson ... ...distant planet. At first the planet seems uninhabited, but the surviving astronauts then meet a group of humans, who are still in a primitive state. To the shock of the astronauts, the humans are then attacked and rounded up by apes on horseback, who seem more advanced than the humans, and who rule the planet, hence the title of the movie. While the film could just been seen as film about the astronauts trying to survive in a hostile world, I would ...

The Doctor saves the day again!
Review of Doctor Who: The Invasion DVD by
MEISTER123
Advantages: Classic story, wonderfully acted.
Disadvantages: Dodgy 60's catsuit!
...all the elements of a Doctor Who legend, Unit, Cybermen and the Doctor (Patrick Troughton) in sparkling form. A very good storyline, well acted and with a good menacing soundtrack, but like so many stories in the 60's, a little too long. This doesn't deter too much from the fact that we are seeing Troughton at is best as the Doctor and Jamie, (Frazer Hines), is also on top form. Zoe, was just a woman in a catsuit really!
The story itself centres ... ...supplier of electronic equipment. The Doctor is forced to team up with UNIT, headed by the recently promoted Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge Stewart to thwart the invasion.
This was one of the stories which unfortunatley is not complete, as episodes 1 and 4 are missing. These have been beautifully rendered in cartoon form and add to the timielessness of the story.
Once again, this DVD does not disapoint in the extras department, as not only is there ...

Making History
Review of Planet Of The Apes (35th Anniversary Edition) (Wide Screen) by
sghawken
Advantages: A really great family movie
Disadvantages: None
...match up to the original Planet Of The Apes (1967), it handled social topics, cultural and religious issues, as well as creating the largest special effects spectacular the world had ever seen. Now in its 40th year Planet Of The Apes still manages to provide a stir of controversy while still looking clean and crisp; and most importantly despite the massive improvements in special effects make up, Planet Of The Apes still offers convincing looking ... ...des singes translated Monkey Planet; Planet Of The apes caused its makers many sleepless nights in the making. Initially they could not find anyone who wanted to get involved in the movie. But the casting of Hollywood legend Charlton Heston in his most energetic role as astronaut Taylor soon swung the winds of change into the film-makers direction. Suddenly everyone wanted a hand, in what was going to prove to be the most difficult movie to make ...
