The film is a comedic and erotically charged look at what makes us tick and it seems that what makes us tick is complex dark and ludicrously funny. Cruel Intentions: Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) are two gorgeous filthy rich manipulative step-sibblings from Manhattan's upper east side. Bored of the girls he has so easily seduced in the past Sebastian has set his sights on the ultimate challenge - the beautiful virginal headmasters' daughter Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). Kathryn sees the perfect opportunity for a wager. Please note:- This is an updated review of something I published here earlier in the year, this review has been deleted by Ciao, I make no apologies for re-producing and updating this review, after all what's the point of a consumer review nobody will get to see?
On a summers afternoon in Hampstead Heath several groups of couples and the odd lone soul spend an afternoon discussing the wonders of life and most importantly SEX!
This movie is one of those deceiver movies, its deceiving for someone that thinks this is a cheap kicks solution to if you pardon the term "Get there rocks off"; because rather nicely while featuring the word sex in the title, this is actually a relatively goods natured movie. Scenes Of A Sexual Nature has a very innocent veil covering it, making it an enjoyable movie for all ages really despite the 15 certificate.
While watching the movie I was reminded of those early days of Film Four, and indeed early days feature quite a lot as this is a movie that's partially funded by booby prize TV station Channel Five. One film in particular rings echoes of this movie, and that's Film Four's movie The Chain (in my opinion one of Film Four's most underrated and forgotten movies), which has a similar style intermingling story except there it was about people moving through the property chain.
As the cast firstly interact with each party they originally start with, some of the stories fragment slightly meaning that some couples meet other souls whose stories have already been touched upon.
Each couple tells a different story; a young gay couple talk about adoption, a chance encounter reunites old flames, a man dates in an unconventional manner, and one thirtysomething man becomes fixated by a teenager and more importantly her underwear.
The story never pushes any boundaries, never provides any nasty or dirty shocks; but stays in a relatively innocent light throughout. Each individual story is well scripted and a contrast from the last, one might be serious, the next could be humorous. All of the stories have a meaningful purpose, and you as a viewer are bound to recognise a situation either you or a friend has been in.
The movie features a decent cast of British actors Teachers and This Life star Andrew Lincoln plays the underwear fetishist, Hugh Bonneville plays the same usual stuffy role he is more often than not seen in, Douglas Hodge and Ewan MacGregor play the gay lovers. The lovely Gina McKee seems on the right track for a normal relationship, but these things never quite go to plan. Sophie Okenedo plays a mentally scarred woman who may or may not be looking for sex, Mark Strong bobs up in most stories and has an interesting little arrangement. Catherine Tate's relationship with Hustle's Adrian Lester comes under analysis and Polly Walker and Benjamin Whitrow share some beautiful forgotten memories, that bring up the movies final moments and give the movie an almost Oscar performing credibility.
Scenes Of A Sexual Nature is one of those "nothing" films, it touches your heart in certain ways but does not add up to a whole lot. As you watch it you'll enjoy it but forget it almost as soon as the credits have started to role. This is an ideal Sunday Afternoon Matinee style movie, the sort our television screens desperately need nowadays. It's incredibly innocent, in fact having just enjoyed watching all the St. Trinians movies for the first time in years, I'd say there is more to offend in those, than there is here. The film is incredibly good humoured, and a delight to watch, and for those unfamiliar with how Britain looks now in London's central park districts this is a fine depiction.
The Rental Version has no special features; although a sale version is available with choices aplenty retailing around £13. Interestingly enough this is a popular rental title so don't expect to be guaranteed a rental if you head off to Blockbuster on a special visit, even half a year after the DVD has been released.
Advantages: Some nice performances. Disadvantages: Some dreadful turns, a lack of directorial talent and a patchy script.
A summer's day on Hampstead Heath sees seven different couples talking about love and sex. There's a soon-to-be-divorced couple discussing why great sex just isn't enough, a gay couple discussing the possibility of adoption, a couple stifled by the awkwardness of their blind date picnic and an elderly pair rediscovering lost love amongst others. The first full-length feature by director Ed Blum is one of those movies that's trying to ape movies like ... ...different stories. However, those films all have a driving, dramatic narrative that is interlinked by one or several dramatic set-pieces. A disparate group of people meet in seemingly random ways and have a jarring impact on others' lives. Unfortunately Blum doesn't have that framework to hang his stories on. Each story here is self-contained with the result that they end up feeling like a series of episodic talking heads. This is especially true ...

Advantages: Amazing plot, script and acting, genius twist Disadvantages: None unless you knew the twist before you watched it
, a soundtrack, but very effective none the less.
All in all Fight Club is one of my favourite films of all time, and is a classic in its own right. The twist was a total surprise to me and made me realise what a genius film this is, but it still stands up to repeat viewings even when you know what is coming. I would recommend this to most people, and even though it is an 18 there isn't much more than violence that makes it deserve this certificate, although there are several scenes of a sexualnature.
