There are a lot of people who don't like this movie and I can understand that but compared to the other horror spoof 'Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Halloween' it Citizen Kane.
The film takes on the basic plot where a killer dressed in a black robe and ghost mask is offing high school students. But of course this time it's all done in comedic styling with plenty of riffs on well known horror movies. The likes of 'I Know What You Did What You Did Last Summer' are also spoofed as well as adverts for 'Budweiser' and much more. I genuinely can say that I enjoyed this film and found a lot of it quite funny purely because I'm a big fan of the Sceram series and found the riffs on that were done quite well. Of course there are some dijointed moments but this does have some degree of plot. Sadly a year later we got a sequel but the less said about that the better.
It's been a while since I've done a DVD opinion so now's the time to get back into
the swing of things and let you know what this shiny disc has to offer.
The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. Because the film is of a young age we get a pristine transfer with very little if not anything to fault. You may notice some grain or slight blemishes in the print if you look hard but considering the low budget status of the film this is a great effort.
As a rule on DVD whenever you watch a comedy film you really can't expect much from the soundtrack and Scary Movie is no exception. There are some good bass moments whenever a scare is to be found but overall the surrounds are used sparingly with the majority of the soundmix confined to the fron speakers. But like I've said this is what you expect.
Now because the film was huge hit and very popular you'd think that some effort would be out into the bonus materials on the dvd. Sadly that doesn't seem to have happened, what you get is disappointing when you consider the potential of the release.
The menus are nicely themed to the movie and animated with music.
First up is a behind the scenes featurette that is exactly what you'd expect. A five minute puff piece that features minimal behind the scenes footage mixed with interviews that say how great the movie is and that everyone should go and see it. It's something you'll only watch once.
The real bonus feature is a collection of 6 deleted scenes that are actually pretty decent.
HOP-A-LONG SHORTY ------------------ Shorty in an intimate scene that gives a whole new meaning to the term 'protective sex'. It's actually pretty funny with a good punchline.
RAY CALLS A PLAY ----------------- Ray's conflicted sexuality get's in the way of a football game. This scene is incerdibly short and sweet but still okay.
BOBBYS LESSON -------------- This is an extended scene of what already exists in the movie of the scene between Cindy and Bobby in the bedroom. It's mildly amusing but then again it's not one of my favourite scenes in the movie.
GAIL SETS SURVEILLANCE CAMERA ------------------------------ This is a very funny scene where gail climbs up a wheelchair bound Kenny to put a camera on the roof. It's cruel and funny and I think it should have been in the final cut.
SHORTY WATCHES GIRL ON SURVEILLANCE CAMERA ------------------------------------------- Another pertty amusing scene where Shorty thinks he's watching a horror movie on TV when the actual events on TV are actually happening outside.
CINDY'S LAST STAND ------------------ A slightly extended version of the final scene in the movie before the credits start to roll. The punchline echoes something that happens at the beginning of the movie.
All the scenes are in a rough format but still widescreen although not anamorphic.
Rounding out things is the trailer and that's all you get if you have a standard DVD player.
Those with access to a DVD-Rom can also read the screenplay with stuff included that didn't make it into the screen. There are also some goofy character profiles, a lame screensaver and a very silly game/guide about the movie.
If you like the movie then this DVD is good to have in your collection. Personally I like to dip into certain scenes from time to time just for a laugh. However I would have liked more on the dvd, surely there are some out-takes somewhere in the vault that would make comedy gold?

Review of Scary Movie (DVD)
Advantages: This is hilarious - if you're of the juvenile persuasion. Disadvantages: This is terribly offensive, disgusting, and occasionally delves into sacrilege.
