With the current trend in increasing numbers of teen horror movies, it seemed inevitable that a movie such as 'Scary Movie', a spoof consisting of parodies from many of the latest horror blockbusters from the States would be an outstanding success. Indeed it was, making the top of the movie charts here, the US and many other countries around the world. But is this mickey-take compilation movie really worth watching?
Well, it depends. It seems to me that people seem to be on mixed views about this movie. In fact, I am not even sure myself whether I enjoyed it or not, as it was not 'spoof' enough to fit into the 'Austin Powers' and 'Dumb and Dumber' category of hysterical stupidity, nor serious enough to make it a movie that can be taken with whole-heartedness sincerity, making it not only hard to categorise but also challenging to understand how it should be perceived. Saying that, my mum, dad and brother loved the movie, each placing it amongst one of the 'funniest movies they had ever seen'. I wasn't so overwhelmed myself.
The story is based around a group of young typically American teenagers who find themselves gradually being killed off one by one by a mysterious unknown killer. The ways in which they are killed all vary, and all feature a parody of some movie, including 'I Know What You Did Last Summer', the 'Scream' trilogy, 'The Sixth Sense', 'The Matrix' and more, which can be amusing, providing you have seen the movie which they are trying to imitate. The whole idea for the plot is very basic and reminiscent of the horror movies of today, not particularly strong and has an ending which is guess-able from quite near to the start. There are a couple of twists in the plot though which adds slightly more humour to the whole thing as well.
The acting is relatively convincing considering the light-hearted, black-humourness of the whole film. Each character develops with his or her own jokes and quips, and there are recurring jokes and leitmotifs in the movie as well.
The DVD itself contains a considerable number of amusing extra features, including 7 Deleted/Extended Scenes, a Behind-the-Scenes featurette and a Theatrical Trailer, which are all of relatively high quality and very amusing. However, besides the option of watching the movie in Italian, there isn't much else on the disc and it doesn't offer too great-value a watch at £16.99 average price, certainly when compared to similar releases which contain many more features of higher quality.
Despite my rather pessimistic criticising view of the whole movie, it seems to have been a global success, and with the sequel already planned for release sometime within the next year (even though there aren't any more movies left to copy), it looks like this genre of je-ne-sais-quoi films are about to take off.
This really isn't a film you should see expecting a laugh-a-minute as you will undoubtedly be disappointed, nor should you see the trailer, as it gives away nearly every joke in the movie. Very cheesy, very crude but not too bad a film, and one I would probably recommend, although not among the classics by any means.

I've seen it too. I wasn't impressed, but then I don't like teen-horrors anyway, I don't think they're too good. I did however, have to laugh when Dawson showed up in the window. That was all that was funny really. :-)

I still can't decided whether or not to bother getting this out on video - it seems to have very mixed reviews. Might put it on the bottom of my kist of things to do! Cheers, Bry
