I would like to conduct a little experiment if you will indulge me and it won't take a minute. Let me ask your opinion (for once) on the following things and try to be honest. OK, here goes...
How do you feel about Eminem? What is your opinion on legalising cannibis? Do you like teddy bears? What about the film, The Exorcist?
These ideas or products usually evoke strong emotive responses and are essential to highlight the enormous diversity intrinsic to todays society. Either that, or they just do your swede in.
Now,let me ask you another question (bear with me, just once more). Do you like spoof horror-comedies with content so purile even the teens that they are aimed at fail to laugh? Where the characters are one-dimensional, the plot, stolen and the references to pop-culture so thick and fast that it leaves you confused and nauseous? Where acting, special effects and content take second place to the all-important joke about willies?
If your answer to this question is yes, read on. If your answer is no, read on anyway (you never know).
Scary Movie is a love-or-hate
film and this is demonstrated by the range of opinions written before mine. It is toilet humour at it's finest and for those of you that enjoy sitting back, occasionally removing your brain from it's typical resting place and letting a film merely happen to you, then this is the pic for you.
The premise is almost insultingly simple. A group of teenage kids are terrorised by (the person they believe to be) the long dead car crash victim of their drunken tomfoolery, one year previously (sound familiar yet). Horror ensues as the viscious murderer dons a frightening costume and attempts to dispatch the pesky kids one by one in increasingly blood-curdling ways.
Here's the twist though and I know you want to hear this one. It isn't scary, because it's a spoof on the entire horror genre. Very clever, I hear you scream (get it?) as you prepare to head to Blockbusters to rent this little beauty. Wrong, I'm afraid. This is film-making at it's cheapest. Jokes about every bodily organ, fluid and function are exaggerated to preposterous proportions, every minority group is assaulted; from the mentally ill, black, perverted, gay and poorly endowed. The shots are cheaper than an evening in JD Wetherspoon's and the concept is older than George Burns.
The horrific thing for me to admit here (and this is in the hope that my fiancee doesn't read this) is that I quite enjoyed it. I'll admit it was a watered-down, poor man's 'Police Squad', but there is something fun about it. It gets reactions, you see. Whether it be from the transvestite school coach who's testicles dangle three feet from his gym skirt or the obligatory sex scene, where the young boy's climax is so powerful that it secure's his girlfriend to the ceiling with a jet of, urm, his....you know...produce. It still gets a reaction whether it be one of absolute disgust or uncontrollable laughter.
Not a classic by any means, This pales in comparison to the likes of 'Airplane' and 'Naked Gun', it does however, demonstrate a greater understanding of popular culture and manages to satirise many film classics from 'The Sixth Sense' to 'Pulp Fiction' with some considerable adeptness.
The acting is as expected, functional only, the special effects are unecessary and left barely noticed and the plot is less believable than Michael Jackson as the lead role in a boxing movie. These things are to be expected though, due to the films of it's ilk that have passed before it but if you can forgive that, and the gratuitous use of sex just because sex sells, then you may just enjoy it.
I would have enjoyed this more if I had been totally out of my tree on cheap lager, or for that matter if I had watched it with a room full of blokes in exactly the same state. In actuality, I watched the film with my fiancee, occasionally catching the odd glare when a young ladies' assets were flaunted across the screen or if I laughed at any scene in the film involving bizzarely characatured sex.
When I finally switched off the film, the silence was thick. I could hear the haunting toll of the church bell in the distance and the slightest gust of wind disturbing the foliage several miles away. I was encouraged to leave the room with the offending article and so here I am.
If you are looking for 'Anne Of Green Gables' or 'Emma' you should run as fast as you can, screaming with arms flailing. If you are looking for 'Dumb and Dumber' or 'There's Something About Mary' just forget it and watch one of them again. If however, you a desperately searching for that one plotless, pointless, tasteless and seemingly endless film that has mysteriously eluded you for an eternity, then congratulations, you have found it.
I just hope that if they do release a sequel, that I can get tanked up before I go and see it. Cutting mounds of pubic hair with a garden strimmer may just be that little bit funnier.

Review of Scary Movie (DVD)
Advantages: This is hilarious - if you're of the juvenile persuasion. Disadvantages: This is terribly offensive, disgusting, and occasionally delves into sacrilege.
