The whole point about Scream was that whilst being a horror movie it was a spoof of a horror movie at the same time. Scary Movie then decides to spoof this? Whilst Scream is actually very cleverly done and actually funny Scary Movie is a lame excuse for crude jokes and poor writing.
Admittedly to write a movie such as Scary Movie or Hot Shots you have to know movies, and the genre that you are spoofing, inside out. The problem is that you do not have to know comedy. All you do is throw in a few ridiculous situations and make people think that they should laugh at it.
I blame one film. We had Airplane a very funny movie, an original idea, and a cast that could carry it off. A new genre was born and none of the young pretenders could follow in the footsteps of the original. Then what happens? Police Squad with Leslie Neilson and the innocent O.J. Simpson another good form of the genre but this time for television.
Police Squad worked because the episodes were short, less than half an hour. Then they thought 'Aha, let's make this into a movie.' So along comes The Naked Gun. This bred all the sequels and movies such as Hot Shots, National Lampoons Loaded Weapon and many many more.
Essentially these movies are all the same. They take one popular movie get a teenager to rewrite it. Get another teenager to rewrite the rewrite because frankly it was too funny. Then they get a B list star to act in it and hope that someone will watch it, and frequently they do. WHY?
These movies appeal to the lowest common denominator. People who laugh at the misfortune of others. People who are not intelligent enough to realise that they are being ripped off with poor writing, bad acting and no originality.
So onto Scary Movie itself. I admit I laughed occasionally, but only for the first ten minutes. After the first ten minutes I had seen every joke that the movie would offer. This was the lowest form of the spoof. Not only were there no original ideas in there but they had lifted some stuff directly from other spoofs. Or they would go for the crude joke when the subtle would probably have been given the bigger laugh. (See penis in ear gag)
This is one of the worst spoofs I have ever seen. You may have guessed that I do not like them in the first place but this one takes the biscuit. If you want a crude comedy I recommend American Pie, if you want a clever comedy then go and see Being John Malkovich, if you want a spoof then try the original Airplane and ignore the rest.
If film is the lowest form of art then this movie is in the lowest form of cinema. DO NOT GO AND SEE THIS BECAUSE YOU ONLY ENCOURAGE THEM and then on video and beer night I will have my friends trying to hire Scary Movie 2 (although it is too late they ARE making one)

Advantages: This is hilarious - if you're of the juvenile persuasion. Disadvantages: This is terribly offensive, disgusting, and occasionally delves into sacrilege.
