I’m really not into spoof movies. I don’t mind the idea of sending up something that’s supposed to be quite funny, but the American’s farcical sense of humour seems to go into overload completely. Has nobody ever heard of subtlety? I really quite surprised myself, therefore, when I found Scary Movie rather amusing.
(I think it was probably the homo-jokes that did it. It was either that or the girl with the banana.)
What surprised me more, however, was that they went on to make a Scary Movie 2, and astoundingly, Scary Movie 3. Oh dear. Whose idea was that?
Scary Movie 3 is essentially a spoof of two big movies, namely The Ring and Signs. It dips its toe, however, into other waters, and certain scenes are stolen from the Others, The Matrix and (somewhat inexplicably) 8 Mile.
Story? Well, there isn’t much of one but here’s what there is. Keen young reporter, Cindy, is assigned to cover the story of a series of “mysterious” crop circles that have appeared on a farmstead in rural America. She has to balance her professional life with caring for her young nephew and whilst collecting him from play school one afternoon she has the fortune to meet George, who happens to live on the farm right next to the field with the crop circles. But there is another mystery to solve. Cindy’s friend Brenda tells her the eerie tale of a “cursed” videotape. Rumour has it that if you watch the videotape then seven days later you will come to an unsavoury end. When Brenda dies as an apparent victim of the cursed tape, Cindy has to figure out the mystery for herself. What do the crop circles mean? What is the curse of the strange video cassette? Why does George have such terrible taste in clothes? All these mysteries and more will be answered, if only Cindy can solve within seven days – providing she doesn’t accidentally kill her nephew in the mean time.
Silly. Silly silly. Silly silly silly.
I would struggle to think of any other words to describe this film. What’s that? I should try harder? Oh, OK then. How about dreadful, embarrassing, amateurish, insulting and juvenile?
I just don’t understand the point of this film. I just don’t understand at whom it is targeted at. I just don’t know why people would have bothered going to the cinema to see this. I cringed from start to finish. I was embarrassed to admit that I was sitting there watching it.
One of the reasons that Scary Movie worked quite well, was because it essentially stuck to one story. It was a spook of Scream, with a bit of I Know What You Did Last Summer thrown in for good measure. It was equally silly, but didn’t feel like a random exercise in film making and had some genuinely quite creative flourishes. Scary Movie 3 is just a mess. How can you do a spoof of horror films and then include farcical versions of The Matrix and 8 Mile? What on earth is scary about those films? Their inclusion in Scary Movie 3 is literally a shameless attempt by the filmmakers to widen their target audience and appeal to as many familiar cinema goers as possible. What a disaster! The 8 Mile spoof scenes are tedious, completely unfunny and absolutely irrelevant to the rest of the film. Even the presence of Simon Cowell is hurried and wasted – I felt as though I’d missed something.
The other scenes aren’t much better either. There is as much flow to this film as you would find in a dried up river bed and the action shifts awkwardly from one place to the next. There is no real point to anything – everyone just seems to be making it up as they go along. It’s like a pantomime. Literally. I hope the cast had fun making it, because I certainly didn’t have any fun watching it.
The characters are all unreservedly awful. Martin Sheen’s “Tom” is so bland and pointless that he might just as well not be there. Simon Rex (George) should stick to porn – a future in comedy is clearly not assured. The heroine, Cindy (Anna Farris) is unbelievably irritating. Do they have whining schools in America? If they do, this girl graduated with first class honours. To make matters worse, Leslie Nielsen is wheeled out as the American president. I think that fans of the genre are supposed to greet their hero with adulation – I just groaned and got another cup of tea from the kitchen.
Amazingly, there ARE some saving graces. When the film concentrates on spoofing The Ring, it does so quite well. Early scenes involving the demon’s emergence from the television are quite funny and later scenes with Queen Latifah work quite well, too. There is a fairly witty but brief scene with a Michael Jackson look-a-like too, but like most American comedies, if you’ve seen the trailers then you will have seen any bits worth tittering at. Strangely enough, the finished product also seems to be quite heavily edited – I remember several scenes from trailers that were not in the finished product.
I was going to say that Scary Movie 3 is certified 15 as a reference to the mental age required to enjoy this film but I think that would be harsh towards the vast majority of intelligent teenagers. The 15 certificate is therefore more likely to refer to the maximum number of minutes of viewing time that you can cope with before your brain turns to mush.
Advantages: end credits.... so glad when they appeared Disadvantages: everything else.
...actually enjoyed the first two Scary Movie films. Toilet gags, slapstick, smut, what more could I want?
Looking at a few of the reviews here on Ciao, as well as in the papers, I was looking forward to the third in the series for the same reasons as above (yet more gutter humour). One thing worried me though….why had the Wayans brothers sued Dimension, as well as try to stop the film being made? I’m pretty certain they’re not actually listed in the ... ...is currently making a fourth Scary Movie, as I would’ve thought this one would be the nail in the coffin of his career. The film is filled with repetitive ‘jokes’ such as the constant hitting/hurting of the lad Cody. He’s hit by a car a few times, thrown out of a window, and battered with a baseball bat. How hilarious. The rest of the so-called jokes are equally as unfunny, not even one hits the mark. In fact, I didn’t hear anyone laugh the whole ...

...I was a fan of Scary Movie.
The first of the series was hilarious. With crazy gags, knock-offs of just about every movie you can imagine, and some of the wittiest bits of cinema ever, it was a real hit with me. The second Scary Movie was a bit dissapointing. The jokes got a little bit old, but a few scenes saved it (Like the cat fight). When the third one came out, I wasn't going to watch it until I saw the adverts with a picture of some dude dressed ... ...long after the events of Scary Movie 2, so the characters have moved on; Cindy is a news reporter, and Brenda is now a school teacher. There is now a host of new characters, and dozens of extras.
The basic story is this; One day Tom and George wake up to find a large, strange crop circle in their field. Brenda, meanwhile, is killed after telling Cindy about a video tape she watched a week ago that kills anyone who watches it in seven days. After ...

...get straight to business - Scary Movie 3 is MEDIOCRE at best.
I have made the sorry mistake of purchasing the Scary Movie 3 DVD and so forth had to watch it.
So I sat down in front of my TV and turned on the DVD. I like sooooooo many others thought this would be fun, as Scary Movie is a comedy (apparently). It is not that I thought the film or the extra features to be unfunny, they were hilarious! The only problem was that I had seen these 1000 ... ...of comedy! Scary Movie was great. It was funny, really funny!
The second was poor. It was the same. It had no new stuff. It was still rather enjoyable and would be good to watch with some friends.
The Third part of the trilogy? Well after the second it couldn't get much worse yet I still expected a poor showing. Everyone who has seen the previous two films will realIy know the storyline quite well:
- First - 'Scream' spoof
- Second - More of ...

...that I have read on Scary Movie 3 have said that the film was a total waste of time and that the film wasn’t even worth watching; but I never believe anything that I read in the papers so I decided to go to the cinema to watch it with one of my friends about 2 weeks ago. Advantages: Passes the time well enough Disadvantages: Not to everybodys taste at all
I'm not sure if anyone else caught the premiere of the ScaryMovie franchises 2004 outing, ScaryMovie3, on BBC1 last night but with nothing else better to do I did. Last night was not the first time I had seen the movie, because as awful a series of films the ScaryMovie set is becoming there is something about them where you have to watch just to see how bad they are getting. Revisiting this film wasn't going to be fun, but it was going to kill some time.
Just like all horror films have to have that beginning scene that sets the tone for the rest of the film, ScaryMovie3 has a beginning scene that won't exactly send chills down your spine, but gets the point across that the film will do as it says on the tin. This scene includes Pamela Anderson, for all those lovers of the cameo, but it's not until after this scene that things ...
Advantages: Another great spoof, this time from the director of 'Airplane' Disadvantages: You either love it or you hate it
and other cast members talk about some of the main cast in this feature and how fun they were to work with, in particular Anna Faris and Simon Rex are spoken about just because of how great they have been in the roles in which they have played. In keeping with the theme of the DVD, there is once again much humour in this feature meaning that although it is over 20 minutes long, you do not find yourself getting bored as you are kept interested and well humoured at all times.
♥ Making ScaryMovie3... FOR REAL ♥
This is a spoof documentary about the film, making for amusing viewing because of the way in which it has been done. Advantages: 3 films Disadvantages: dosent include the last film (4th)
Scarymovies have all been a good value for money but this rises far above all of them. For £30--£35 you get the boxset which is amazing value for money.
Scarymovie 1: From a masked killer killing the gang of children off 1 by 1 to winning a drama contest, this is possibly the best one yet.
Scarymovie 2: In this film the gang get chosen to stay at a haunted house for a few nights, when everything goes wrong only the children are there to start it out. from a girl being possesed to getting attacked by a cat.
Scarymovie3: A truly awsome film parody taking the mick out of the matrix and the ring. In this film the prime minister has got some mental problems and shows his but to they whole world. This is possibly the best scarymovie

Cindy has now left college and is making a living as journalist and TV news reporter. When crop circles start to appear in Tom Logan's farm, right about the same time that a good friend of hers is murdered by a psychotic video tape Cindy plays a hunch that the two occurrences are somehow related. Parodying such modern classics as Hideo Nakata's 'Ring' and M. Night Shyamalan's 'Signs' and featuring a host of movie stars from Pamela Anderson to Charlie Sheen sending themselves up, it becomes clear that to 'Scary Movie 3' nothing is sacred! This second sequel in the series of hilarious genre-spoofing movies from David Zucker (co-creator of 'Airplane!' and 'The Naked Gun') stars Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell, the girl that bizarre and horrific events seem to follow around.
