Scary Movie 2 was a much anticipated movie for myself. I loved Scary Movie you see, it was just hilarious in parts and really could take the p**s out of other movies. All the actors were excellent in their role and it sits proudly in my DVD collection. However, after seeing some of the ratings for the 2nd helping of Scary Movie I wasn’t too convinced!
I never did get around to watching it until the other night when me and a few mates decided to have a video night with loads of food, drink and a couple of videos. We often do as it provides a good nights entertainment for minimal cost which is always good in my book, especially towards the end of the month when things are starting to get a bit tight!
The movie went down well with me and my mate, but his girlfriend was not convinced, she was trying to find the intelligent side of the movie and if your looking for that, you just aint going to find it in this movie! I’m sorry folks, but that’s the way it is and you’ll just have to like it or lump it! Scary Movie tries its hardest to rip the p**s out of other movies on the market, The Exorcist, The Matrix, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Charlie’s Angels are just some I can think up at the moment, but every scene is trying to take the micky out of some kind of movie somewhere. The whole movie is basically set upon House on the Haunted Hill for example.
The
movie itself is for those who have watched all the movies, or at least some of them. It’s no point sitting down to watch this movie if you haven’t watched any other movies before, your not going to get the gags and the goofs that this movie purposely sticks into the pot to come up with the movie in the first place. You’ve got to have watched the big movies around in the previous year to get the gag’s, or at least some of them.
The movie was directed by Keenan Ivory Wayans, director of the first instalment of Scary Movie. Surely he could see that this movie wasn’t even half as good as the first, but still, I’m not one to moan! It seems that the Wayan family themselves seem to have a big part in the movie, afterall, theres the director and then Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans who wrote the script. They also have parts in the movie, so it seems to me to be a family effort! They had $45m to make this film a box office wonder, what happened to that money!? I suppose it was spent on the set and the actors, and a few special effects here and there. It certainly didn’t make the film a box office smash hit, taking $71m in the US and just £4.3m over here in the UK. I say ‘just £4.3m’ because that’s not that great in movie terms! They made their budget back though and a little bit of pocket money, enough to make another sequel anyway, Scary Movie 3 – Episode 1 – Lord of the Brooms…..oh I wonder what this one’s going to revolve around?! Hint…take a look at the title and then think of big films this year! What we see in that title is Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter! I look forward to it, seriously and do hope that it’s better than Scary Movie 2.
For those of you who don’t know, here’s a rough outline of the plot…A bunch of school kids are set an assignment, to visit a house that is supposedly haunted to investigate their sleep patterns. However, on the other hand, it’s a chance for the head teacher, Professor Oldman (Tim Curry) to spy on the girls in the showers as he has cameras all over the place. Things go wrong as soon as they get there, with the butler taking the micky out of Hannibal and basically wrecking all the food available and teaching them how to use a chicken to your own personal benefits. Things get more weird with spooky goings on, basically resembling House on the Haunted Hill. All the crew are back from the first movie, which was refreshing, especially seeing the two Wayans brothers doing their stuff, these guys just make me laugh anyway, especially Shorty!
That’s basically it for a plot. We don’t see an ending where everything is better again, infact I can’t even remember the ending! Anyway…it’s a comedy, is it funny? Yes, in parts. In other parts it tries to be funny, but sadly isn’t and you can tell that they have tried their best, you feel like their actually staring at you waiting for an applaud after the effort they have used to make a joke seem funny. However, theres a lot of toilet humour that deserves a laugh and it got quite a few laughs from me, especially in the first couple of scenes with the exorcist on the toilet (you’ve got to watch it to see what I mean!)
The spoofs are there like I have already said, but these ones are not subtle like the first helping of Scary Movie, these are right in your face, they may aswell just tell you what film they are emulating because some of them I knew before the scene started that something was coming, and the next scene would be from a movie that I had never seen, nor could I guess what was going on, take for instance the basketball scene for those of you who have seen this movie, what was all that about!?
Performances are generally good. However, again I think they did better in the first dose. The female character who a lot of blokes fancied in the first film has lost a lot of weight and looks different, so don’t got renting the movie just for her. Shorty is there though in his full glory, and so is Ray, who’s just as funny as he was in the first one with his facial expressions and gay antics! One of the most notable performances was from a puppet! Yes, theres this parrot in a cage, you know the ones who can talk. This one is hilarious though, coming up with some of the funniest lines in the movie, and I’ve just remembered how it ends, the parrot is involved in the end scene.
The jokes are crude, rude and there is quite a bit of swearing to be taken on board. For me these things don’t matter and I’m quite happy to sit down in front of what I know to be a mediocre movie from it’s ratings, not expect to much from it and enjoy the good bits. However, for some this movie won’t do anything and they won’t be able to see any funny sides as they will be offended that it’s not intellectual enough or they can’t see the funny bits for the bad bits. You have to have a warped sense of humour to enjoy this film, you have to just get with the flow and see it for what it is. Don’t expects suspense, don’t expect to be scared to death just because of the title, but do expect to be amused for 90 minutes. It’s a good film for an occasion such as the one I watched it on, but maybe not for a couple wanting a movie to have a nice night in. My recommendation? 3 out of 5 for it’s classic funny bits.

Advantages: This is hilarious - if you're of the juvenile persuasion. Disadvantages: This is terribly offensive, disgusting, and occasionally delves into sacrilege.
