Scary Movie 2 is perhaps one of the most brilliant sequels since Ace Ventura 2, in that it is not just a clone of the original (see Speed 2 if you don’t get it).
The Wayans Brothers had a vision: Spoof every horror movie, teen flick, and classic film ever made, and be sure to throw in plenty of sex and drug use so that the teenagers in the audience will love it.
In other words, the mega-popular comedians put together a film (actually, two films now) that they themselves would watch until the tape wore out and the DVD version set itself on fire from being played in Repeat mode all month.
I have just finished watching the VHS version, which I borrowed from a friend, so don’t be fooled into believing that you HAVE to rent or purchase the DVD in order to thoroughly enjoy this particular film. While DVD extras and the convenience of skipping trailers for other films are nice, it’s not necessary – at least for Scary Movie 2.
The film begins with a very wicked take on The Exorcist, in which a trio of priests are attempting to exorcise demons from the stereotypical Possessed Chick (who happens to pee on the carpet, much like a dog). Watching the priests and other guests in the girl’s parents’
house singing "Shake Yer Ass" is truly a laugh riot, as it’s part of the opening dialogue, but it only gets better from there.
From a vomit fight (yes, you read that correctly) to the head priest’s final decision regarding the exorcism of the demons, you will laugh until your spleen explodes.
From there, we are given a nice scene of the original cast. They are now in college, though I doubt that any of them are going to graduate with honors. They are, of course, the stupid, libido-driven morons that make up the cast of any horror movie. You will see all of your favorites in this sequel, from Cindy the airhead to Shorty the blunt-smoking idiot. Please, whatever you do, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISSECT THIS FILM. It’s meant to simply be enjoyed, so don’t start asking the inevitable “But how could they do this?” crap.
As it turns out, the survivors of the original movie’s massacre are back: This time they are lured into a haunted house by their psychology professor and his wheelchair-bound assistant, a man with a bad combover and no use of his legs.
The students are part of a secret study on life after death, but do not know this. The professor is, of course, using them for his own good, but you figured that out already, didn’t you?
The point is simply, of course, for the kids to figure out what is going on, and get the hell out of this house before their bus comes to get them on Monday - otherwise, they will all be massacred by the invisible poltergeist, the former Mr. Kane, whose mistress incidentally looked quite a bit like Cindy the airhead.
The plot is actually beside the point, if you can believe that.
Rather, Scary Movie 2 focuses on sight gags and spoofs to make the audience laugh until their sides ache, and it pulls it off neatly. Most fans of Leslie Nealson films will adore this flick, as well as the original Scary Movie.
You’ll see all sorts of take-offs, sex scenes, drug use, and horrible Monica Lewinsky jokes. You’ll witness a wild and kinky sex scene between a female student and the invisible poltergeist. You’ll see take-offs on Mission: Impossible 2; The Exorcist; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and a host of other hit films.
You will not be bored or offended unless you are a sophisticated moviegoer, a person who shudders at: gallons of seminal fluid blowing Cindy into a door; gay sex scenes involving a clown; an enormous marijuana plant rolling Shorty up and attempting to smoke him; tons of crude jokes and sight gags, or the unbelievable happening at every twist and turn.
The best characters in this film are:
The caretaker, who refers to his mangled, shrunken hand as “My strong hand.”
The wheelchair-bound Dwight, assistant to the Professor, who on several occasions gets into sarcastic bouts with the caretaker. (“Let me give you a hand,” “Why don’t you give me a standing ovation,” et cetera – trust me, it’s the funniest part of the whole damned film).
Ray, the suspected homosexual who gets hot and heavy with the clown toward the middle of the film.
Shorty – well duh! How could the pothead NOT be the coolest in this film?
Whatever the case, don’t expect this to be a clone of the original. It is every bit as fresh and brilliant as Scary Movie, but takes on an entirely different focus despite using most of the original cast of characters. It is not the ultra suave adult-oriented film some people wish it were, but it is far from cheap comedy.
I enjoyed it because it made me laugh until tears rolled down my eyes.
I enjoyed it because the acting is not outstanding, but that is beside the point: The comedy is first-rate, though it will remind you of old Cheech & Chong films in some areas.
I enjoyed it, simply put, because it was more than worth watching.
You’ll like it for the outstandingly hilarious scenes scattered throughout the movie. You’ll hate it for its utter lack of sophistication – if you’re that sort of person, anyway.
I suppose it could be summed up like this: “If you’re a teenager, or anyone else who still laughs when somebody coughs the word ‘Penis!’ in the library, then you’ll love this film.”
Note: Here in the States, this film has been rated “R” meaning persons under the age of seventeen were not allowed to see it in theatres without an adult present. I definitely agree with this rating, as the film IS, after all, filled with sex, mocked-up violence, twisted drug humor, and a host of other strange and bizarre comedy.
