Scary Movie was a pretty strange concept in the first place. It spoofed the slasher genre, picking particularly on the Scream series of movies for its inspiration and main target...interesting seeing as Scream was a spoof in the first place. But then I suppose spoofing a spoof IS something new and I actually thought the movie was pretty funny...in a gross, juvenile kind of way. I was rather looking forward to the inevitable sequel but was more than a little dismayed to see it released quite so soon after Scary movie, I had fears that there hadn't been enough time spent inbetween movies for there to have been a decent, really funny script written and went in to watch it thinking that it wouldn't be very good.

Sometimes I just hate being proven right..

Scarey Movie 2 is not a good movie, its not even a good concept which the first 5 minutes will tell you you that. With the Slasher movie genre spoofed to death by the first movie, Scarey Movie 2 turns its attentions to the 'supernatural' genre of horror movies which include such things as The Exorcist and Stephen Spielberg's Poltergeist. Of course we have seen that before in a number of other movies including the Leslie Nielson spoof Repossessed, which was a direct spoof of The Exorcist itself. Scarey Movie 2 then already begins by retreading old ground covered a number of years ago by a better movie, and not needing its grave dug over thankyou very much...

The first thing you will notice about this movie is that the grossout humour and juvenile behaviour is back once again, that is obvious from the first couple of minutes. The second thing you'll notice is that so is the cast from the first movie - most of whom you will remember as having died during that one. Now, for most people thats going to be a little confusing, but its part of the spoof itself because the horror movie genre(especially slashers it has to be said, even though this one is done which parodying those) is well known for bringing back dead folks as if nothing has happened in their sequels. Well anyway, the same guys are back and playing the same characters with the same foibles...and often resulting in the same jokes. It has to be said that a lot of the jokes from the first movie, or at least the 'ideas' from the first movie are rehashed here again which is a bit disappointing, but then...they rushed it, we can see by the timeframe - maybe another parody? No movies have their sequels released faster than horror films - sometimes during the same year - look at the Friday the 13th films for example. But anyway, if this was the case then most people aren't going to get the joke, and when they see how flat much of this is, they aren't going to appreciate it even if the joke does exist. But on with the story...

We begin with an Exorcist take and the funniest part of the movie, complete with an iffy priest played by James Woods(is he that hard up for work). Of course the very first gag is Regan urinating all over the carpet so we know exactly what we are in store for. Anyway, the funny bit comes and goes and we are introduced to our band of idiots again who are invited to come to stay in a huge mansion - a mansion which of course turns out to be haunted. Ok, forgive me for interupting the 'plot' again, but it seems to me that the Wayan's decided to base the entire general premise of their movie around...well around that abysmal flop of a movie "The Haunting". Someone please tell me that they couldn't be quite so dense as to spoof a movie which most people who saw it thought was cr*p and the vast majority haven't seen and have no idea what is being spoofed. Well anyway, for most of us its a haunted house and they are invited...and its all very unfunny from there onwards. There really is no need to elaborate upon the plot at all, because whilst writing this review I suddenly realise that infact there really isn't a plot to elaborate on - they just shoved a bunch of weirdos in a house with more weirdos and let them move from one allegedly 'funny' scene to the next. Finis.

This movie leaves a lot of unanswered questions, not least why the hell did I just spend good money to see that trash?! But also such things as, if the Wayan's are going to call a movie Scary Movie, why exactly doesn't it parody horror movies? We have more elements of other more recent non-horror movies being parodied such as Dude, Where's My Car and Charlie's Angels than we do actual horror movies. We must also ask the question of why these guys, who obviously have no more than a casual interest in horror movies or else they would have been able to come up with gags other than the ones they have done, would decide to tackle a spoof of them. Scary Movie was equally guilty of that, very few scenes being reminiscent of actual horror movies, most of general popular cinema like The Matrix. The horror genre must be dead easy to spoof because so much of it is so completely ludicrous - these guys prove that they are not fans of the genre and their movie suffers for it..again.

The biggest gripe though about this movie is that it simply isn't very funny. A butler's deformed hand is obviously the funniest thing in the world to the directors of this movie and resultantly they have to base 10 or more gags around it. It grabs, it gropes, it gets in the dinner guest's food...it gets on the audience's nerves because we fail to see anything particularly funny in what is effectively a 'hand' no matter how deformed. Once again we are asked to laugh at the disabled as in Scary Movie which is probably meant to shock us by its foray into such bad taste but is frankly quite boring. I have laughed at the disabled before, it was a French movie feature real mongol people, playing their parts and it was damn funny - this is not. Yawn through these scenes and the rest of the laughs are either extremely obvious or based on semen, turds, urination and a variety of other bodily functions either human of animal. Projectile poop from a parrots butt? A human poop in the kitty litter? Oh my aching sides!

Scary Movie is probably meant to make us laugh by offending us to the point where we laugh along in acute embarrassment. It doesn't work - we have seen too much of the same thing in the last 10 years and simply pushing the boundaries a little further each time just becomes boring after a while...something the Farrely's found out with Me, Myself and Irene, another distinctly unfunny movie - but still one which is streets ahead of this one. Its just all so damn tiresome, the jokes all falling flat around a carboard cast and the inexlicably bad choice of Anne Faris as the leading lady as it were nailng the coffin lid shut. I think I ended up making more references to scary movies in this review than the movie did in its whole running length as well...

The bottom line is that if you liked the original Scary Movie then you just might find a little mild entertainment here, but not a lot. If you were bored, by or simpy hated it then you are going to be even less impressed by this abysal sequel. Personally, I thought it was absolute trash and I actually liked the first movie, definitely 1 star all the way.
