The tagline on the poster for last year’s surprise hit ‘Scary Movie’ read ‘No Shame, No Mercy, No Sequel!’ Once the film became such a success at the box office, it seemed incredibly unlikely that the filmmakers would honour the last two words of that slogan! Twelve months on, the inevitable ‘Scary Movie 2’ arrives for another round of horror movie lampooning, totally unsubtle gags and irreverent humour.

THE PREMISE

A small group of college students are invited by Professor Tim Curry to spend a weekend at a deserted country retreat. Unknown to the students, this retreat is commonly known as 'Hell House’, rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of its former owner Hugh Kane. The Professor leads them to believe that the weekend is all about a group study of insomnia. The truth is that the Professor hopes that these youngsters, thanks to their near death experiences during the serial killing that took place the year before, will act as the catalysts to awaken Kane’s spirit. Indeed, not long after their arrival, one student, Cindy (Anna Faris), starts to feel that she has some sort of psychic connection with this house…

REVIEW

Does this premise sound familiar? Of course it does. Whereas ‘Scary Movie’ was essentially a pastiche of ‘slasher’ films like ‘Scream’ and ‘I know what you did last summer’, the sequel lampoons the haunted house concept – primarily poking fun at ‘The Haunting’ (the house in that film was haunted by a Hugh Crain!) and to a lesser extent ‘The Game’ and ‘The Legend of Hell House’.

The film gets off to an abysmal start. The first quarter of an hour, detailing the visit of a priest to a remote house to purge a young girl of an evil spirit – in other words a spoof of the exorcist - is totally unfunny. When the inevitable vomiting gag arrived it actually made me feel rather nauseous. So much throwing up was going on that at one stage I thought I could smell the stuff. I was forced to put my popcorn down for a few minutes at this point understandably losing my appetitie!

After this trite opening, things have to improve and thankfully they do, once the story moves to the college campus and then shortly to ‘Hell House’. Be warned that good taste is not on the agenda! The film is constantly playing for laughs and it seems that no taboo is left untouched - jokes about paraplegics, the physically deformed, smoking weed, buggery, oral sex and masturbation are all included. As the action stakes are upped in the film’s last half-hour other movies – ‘Hollow Man’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels’ – start to come in for the parody treatment.

Parody films don’t always work. I think the reason why this particular film isn't anywhere near as effective as the best spoof movies (such as ‘The Naked Gun’) is that it generally tries to keep the same jokes running throughout the entire film – and that includes some from the original ‘Scary Movie’! ‘The Naked Gun’ always had a fresh jape up its sleeve.

What is more, although attempts at jokes come thick and fast here, they really are something of a mixed big of hits and misses. When the gags hit, they pretty much hit the bull’s-eye. When they miss, they aren’t even anywhere near the proverbial barn door. There are one or two sequences that would simply be lost on British audiences because they are quite clearly parodying American adverts or programmes that are unfamiliar to us.

The majority of the juvenile cast members that were in ‘Scary Movie’ have been re-united for the sequel, even though I’m sure most of them were killed off in the first film! You won’t have heard of any of them (I certainly hadn’t) but I’ve no doubt the gorgeous Anna Faris has a big future ahead of her. Whereas the 'Last summer' films made a star of the previously unknown Jennifer Love Hewitt, I'm confident that these spoof films are going to catapult Faris into the limelight sooner rather than later.

The faces among the older cast members will probably be more familiar to you. The most well known will be Tim Curry as the professor of course – does he ever play a totally straight non-eccentric character?! You may also recognize Chris Elliot from ‘There’s something about Mary’, as the caretaker with the horribly deformed hand!
James Woods (what on earth is he doing in stuff like this?!) also has a cameo role in the prologue as the priest who comes to perform the exorcism.

I decided to take advantage of the fact it only costs half price to watch a film before noon on Friday to Sunday at my local multiplex. I certainly don’t think that it is the sort of film I would deliberately choose to pay full price to see if I can avoid it. Nevertheless, I found this a passably entertaining way to spend a Friday morning. I should point out however, that I would probably enjoy it more than most because I’m quite partial to a bit of lavatorial humour, so in that sense (even if at times the movie is undeniably puerile), I couldn’t help but raise a smile! Secondly I am a male of the species, and men would have a better time watching this movie than women primarily because of the scenes in which the young actresses appear scantily clad.

What spoils the fun a little is that, just as he did in the first film, director Keenen Ivory Wayans is intent on throwing in one or two thinly disguised quasi-political statements behind the jokes. ‘Black people always get the short end of the stick’ is the message that keeps filtering through the comedy. They may have a point, they may not – I’m certainly going to get into a discussion about it here - but the film can simply do without such social comment.

RECOMMENDED?

To summarize then, there are several more films doing the rounds at the moment that are more worthy of your time than ‘Scary Movie 2’. However, if you have seen them all and you have a spare few hours on your hands, then you will probably find it (to repeat a phrase I used above) 'passably entertaining'!

I do advise Wayans to call it a day at two episodes as far as this particular concept is concerned. Stretching the ‘Scary Movie’ franchise to a third film would really be pushing it too far! If you enjoyed the first one, you’ll like this too. If you didn’t, avoid it like the plague. As for how it stands on its own merits? Well…it is the sort of film that during which, you often find yourself laughing despite the intellectual part of your mind desperately trying to remind you that you shouldn’t be! Leave your brain at the cinema entrance and surprise yourself with how much you actually enjoy this infantile stuff!
