This is another of my old videos I've watched this week. I remember that I bought this from one of those Cash Converter type shops several years ago for a couple of quid. I had just seen it advertised in a magazine earlier that day, and even though I had no idea what it was about I decided to get it as it was so cheap!
~The Plot~
Gilly Noble (Chris Klein) grew up in an orphanage and now has a job working at an animal rescue centre in Indiana. He meets and falls in love with Jo Wingfield (Heather Graham) after she accidentally cuts part of his ear off when he goes for a trim at the hairdressing salon when she works. Jo has recently moved back to Indiana from Oregon following a split with her boyfriend, and helps to look after her father, Walter (Richard Jenkins) who has suffered two strokes.
When they have been dating for six months, Gilly proposes. Jo accepts and Gilly finally feels that everything is going right in his life for once, the only thing missing is finding his birth parents.
One night he gets a call from the private detective who has been tasked with tracking his parents down. He reveals that Gilly's mother is none other than Valdine Wingfield (Sally Field) - who is also Jo's mother. That's right, Gilly has been sleeping with his biological sister. How will he cope with this news? And what will happen when Jo runs back to Oregon to marry her evil ex-boyfriend Jack?
~My Thoughts~
Well as you can see, the plot is a little bit silly - a lot silly actually, and the further you get through the movie, the more ridiculous things become, but I don't want to say too much as I'd give away the plot.
Chris Klein and Heather Graham both play their parts well, and there is a believable chemistry between them, but at the end of the day they can only be as good as the script they were given and this movie seems to swing from cringy to sick at times. There is a scene in which Gilly and Jo stand on the roof of the animal shelter and Gilly recites a poem that he supposedly says after any animal is put down at the shelter. I think the intention of this scene is that it is supposed to be romantic, but instead it does nothing but make me cringe.
I mentioned that there is sick humour in this film - well what would you expect from a film about a guy who realises he's been sleeping with his sister? If you are easily offended then I would suggest staying away from this film as I don't think everybody would appreciate the humour here. In fact, I would say it's quite juvenile and immature in a lot of places - I definitely don't think that this is the sort of film my parents would appreciate!
Overall, it's certainly watchable, and having re-watched it recently, I found there was a little more to it than I had initially remembered. There are some humorous characters, such as Dig McCaffrey (Orlando Jones) and the camp Indian hairdresser (sorry I can't find his name, I'm not sure he actually had one in the film) who shouts 'Prevert' (and no, that's not a typo) every time he sees Gilly. So, I'm going to give this three stars - although preferably I think I would have gone for 2 and a half. I think this is quite a funny film, despite the not so great plot, but I doubt the humour will be to everyone's taste.
