What the usually respectable and credible Sally Field is doing in this I will never know. In fact, what any of the actor's were thinking when they signed up for this crass, tasteless and totally un-pc film, I am not entirely sure, as ‘Say it isn’t so’ is one of the worst flicks I have seen in a long while.
Whilst you might have your doubts about going to see a ‘comedy’ about incest (most people I have spoken to have virtually guessed the plot in their first attempt, based purely on this fact), on the basis that it is a highly dubious topic and not even slightly pleasant when you stop to think about it, the main theme of the film is quite frankly the least of it’s concerns. In case you haven’t guessed the plot, it follows thus (THIS IS MY WARNING I AM ABOUT TO REVEAL A SYNOPSIS Of THE PLOT!): romantic guy (Chris Klein), grew up in an orphanage and now working at the local cat pound in some small American town which might as well be named Crapsville, Indiana, grows up dreaming of the kind of relationship his shrink says he’ll never have as he resists commitment courtesy of his fear of abandonment as caused by his being orphaned. Then he hears about a new stylist at the salon (Heather Graham) who is unquestionably the worst hairdresser in the world but is rather special. He goes to gaze at her through the glass, queues for a haircut, ends up in A&E after she does a Van Gogh on the poor boy and finally, they get it together. Six months later Gilly (short for Gilbert) pops the question, she says yes and the private investigator hired by Gilly to locate his remaining family (although I’m sure he lived in an orphanage) says he’s found his mum. She turns out to be the hairdresser’s mum too, and everyone is repulsed - ‘You ponied your sister!’ is their mum’s response – and he loses his job and ends up scraping road-kill off the highway for a living and letting himself go to the extent that he becomes exactly what our stereotype of a small-town, sister-loving pervert should look like.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, whilst Heather Graham’s character flees back to her ex and makes plans to marry, it turns out that they’re not siblings after all, and Gilly spends the rest of the film trying to tell her that he’s not her brother and that their love is ok. With hilarious consequences. NOT.
Anyway, the weak jokes and attempts at crude vulgarity as the basis for most of the film’s humour, result in a pathetic, tasteless film, which will leave you cringing and wondering who the hell found it funny. This being the work of the Farelly brothers, who also master-minded ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and ‘There’s Something About Mary’, will give you some idea of the type of humour, but this is just crap in comparison. The gross-out jokes that you can’t help but laugh at have been replaced but pure revulsion and are not even a simple case of bad taste – they’re just bad. If you liked the aforementioned movies, which sit in the same vein as ‘American Pie’, you’ll probably not walk out of the cinema in disgust, but you won’t leave with that satisfied feeling they gave you. The actor’s performances were excellent considering the material they had to work with and their characters solid, but they were entirely let down by the content and script of the piece to the point where this film was just dull and no pretty faces or superstar names are going to help it one bit.
Advantages: funny in places Disadvantages: humour a bit sick at times, weak plot
...but I don't want to say too much as I'd give away the plot.
Chris Klein and Heather Graham both play their parts well, and there is a believable chemistry between them, but at the end of the day they can only be as good as the script they were given and this movie seems to swing from cringy to sick at times. There is a scene in which Gilly and Jo stand on the roof of the animal shelter and Gilly recites a poem that he supposedly says after any animal ... ...here. In fact, I would say it's quite juvenile and immature in a lot of places - I definitely don't think that this is the sort of film my parents would appreciate!
Overall, it's certainly watchable, and having re-watched it recently, I found there was a little more to it than I had initially remembered. There are some humorous characters, such as Dig McCaffrey (Orlando Jones) and the camp Indian hairdresser (sorry I can't find his name, I'm not ...

...successful example of the genre, Say It Isn't So is a shining example of how it can go so very wrong. All the elements are indeed here, the painful sight gags, the embarrassment of the actors, the bad taste, making fun of the handicapped...you know the kind of thing, but those involved with the making of this fail to deliver the goods in any of the supposedly funny scenes. Embarrassing the principal players is where the comedy comes from, but it ... ...those times. You can't even say that the acting is worth a light because even with some of Hollywood's more talented actors on screen its also pretty awful. I have never been much of a fan of Heather Graham, neither seeing her as being a raging beauty or a particularly talented actress, but this would have to be the worst performance I have seen from her so far. Her role in the movie seems to be to stick out her breasts and be bounced around from ...

Say It Isn’t So
Thank God for Sky Movies. Yes, we may pay a little extra in our subscription for the movie channels, but there are so many movies available to watch each month that the cost can be justified. As I said just a couple of sentences ago, thank God! Because if I’d have paid to see this film at the cinema, or to get it out on DVD, I’d have been mightily peeved at paying for such a crappy film. In fact, ... ...is rated a 15, I’d say that they were aiming at an age group perhaps 5 or 6 years too old. The comedy is juvenile, poorly executed and badly filmed. Excruciating accidents, empathy at the embarrassing problems faced by the characters and gross jokes can make an excellent movie if done correctly – Think American Pie or There’s Something About Mary. This just doesn’t work, and although the film has the “I wonder how it will turn out” factor, it’s still ...

Advantages: Maybe younger teens would enjoy it - a girlie outing perhaps Disadvantages: The HUGE cringe factor involved. I spent much of my time silently begging the director to have resisted the next obvious pun...
The plot = ordinary. Seemed pretty harmless and a typical romantic comedy to fill a wet afternoon when my boyfriend and i had nowhere else to go.
However, i wasn't prepared for just how cringeworthy this film actually is! Argh! If I was asked to write a script which would embarrass a real life Mr Bean then this is pretty close to what I'd come up with!
Basically, this guy named Gilly, who is your typical disadvantaged lad who may have the ability ... ...blonde hairdresser (who cuts off his ear - more painful than funny tho). With the aid of bad poetry and lots of eye gazing, they fall cheesily in love and there's a proposal banner towed along by a plane etc etc.
When they find out they are brother and sister you are almost relieved, until their mistake is discovered and Gilly sets off to save his beloved from marriage to your typical bad-guy who controls the town and has a loyal gang of gormless ...

Advantages: one or two funny bits Disadvantages: mostly rubbish! lots of swearing, little story
Under 17's must be accompanied by an adult! How could they insist on adults sitting through this torturous drivel? Contains strong language (yes, most adults wouldn't deny this). Crude humour and strong sexual content says the blurb outside the cinema...well, yes, I would agree, but I was falling asleep from boredom during much of it, so it didn't do a lot for me I'm afraid. Chris Klein, Heather Graham, Sally Field and Richard Jenkins get together ... ...an orphan works as a dog catcher. Jo is a hairdresser who cuts off his ear in much the same way as Vincent Van Gogh cut off his, but for reasons of incompetance rather than neccessity. They fall in love, sleep together and then find out they are brother and sister (heard that storyline somewhere before, I think!). Much of the dialogue is just plain filth and the sexual dialogue is embarrassing for us 'oldies' and, I suspect, equally so for the teenagers ...

Advantages: Two great Comedies Disadvantages: None
One of the funniest films that i've seen in recent times was 'SayItisn'tSo'. Me and my mates could not stop ourselves from rolling around on the floor, it had so many one liners, and the subject for the film adds to the hilarity. Once i had picked myself off the floor, i knew that i would need to get myself a copy for my ever growing DVD collection. It took awhile to find and when i did it came as part of a Double, which suited me down to a tee, due to the other DVD in the pack which features my future wife (one lives in hope!).
I purchased the set from HMV for £10 over 2 years ago, but it is available at Amazon.co.uk for a little over £6 +p&p!
The two DVD's come in a cardboard sleave/box, I discarded mine long ago, It gives no extra information and is only used really for packaging. The only evidence that remains that the DVD ...
Advantages: two whole hours of Bon Jovi at there best Disadvantages: couldn't find any
Having seen Bon Jovi three times in concert it is never quite the same watching the shows on dvd. However The Crush Tour dvd manages to capture the atmosphere as you watch the huge crowd excitedly waiting for their heroes to take the stage. I then sang along to old favorites as well as many new songs from the Crush album. Jon and the boys are at their rocking best, enjoying themselves which shows in the dazzaling performance. One lucky lady gets to dance with Jon to the envy of myself and most of the ladies(and some of the men) in the audience no doubt.
After the fantastic concert i still had 30 mins of backstage antics to enjoy. plus the two great videos for Its My Life and SayItIsn'tSo.
I highly recommend this dvd for any Bon Jovi fan. ...
Advantages: A great package, high content Disadvantages: slightly below par performance
through twenty tracks with efficiency which shows them for the old pros they are.
If you are a long time fan this will not be the best you have ever seen Bon Jovi perform (Newcomers should be suitably impressed) There is a certain spark that is not quite there like in other shows, although this may be down to the fact the crowd are largely uninspiring; it is a fine performance but lacks the magic Bon Jovi concerts are famed for. It is worth sayingit rains through the whole show which maybe dampened the spirit.
The DVD as a package on the other hand is very good. This was an early DVD release and there is a decent bonus features, including very good music videos for it's my Life, and Sayitisn'tSo. There is also a 30 minute backstage and interview documentary which is insightful and interesting. To round off the extras is a now out dated ...

"...[A] spectacularly indecent raunch-fest....Directed by Farrelly protege J.B. Rogers in a sweetly ironic style..." (Box Office, p.59, 01/05/2001)

DVD Description
With SAY IT ISN'T SO, the Farrelly Brothers (THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, DUMB AND DUMBER) give their former first assistant director J. B. Rogers a shot at the big time. The result is another crude comedy that finds laughs in a series of outrageous situations. Working from a script by first-timers Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow, the film tells the confused story of orphan Gilly Noble (Chris Klein), who is employed at an animal shelter in Shelbyville, Indiana. When he lands in the barber's chair of the beautiful Jo Wingfield (Heather Graham), he's convinced he's found the woman of his dreams. A passionate, steamy romance develops, but when Gilly finds out that he and Jo are actually offspring from the same parents, Valdine (Sally Field) and Walter Wingfield (Richard Jenkins), he becomes a social outcast. Jo flees to Beaver, Oregon, to reunite with her former fiance, the wealthy but conniving Jack Mitchelson (Eddie Cibrian), but when Gilly learns that he isn't Jo's sibling after all, he must track her down to win back her affections. Unfortunately, Valdine wants Jack's money, so she will do whatever it takes to keep the truth from coming out. Featuring likeable performances by both Klein and Graham, Rogers's debut is a raucous comedy with a solid supporting cast.
