The 2004 film Saw spouted three sequels in three successive years. Its twisting plotlines have been acclaimed both critically and commercially.
The Plot
Two men, Adam and Lawrence, wake up in what appears to be a very dirty and old bathroom, each chained to opposite walls. In between them is a dead body in a pool of blood, a tape player within reach. Each has a tape, revealing the 'game'. Thus follows a twisting tale of events set up by Jigsaw, a man hell bent on revenge by playing mindgames with his intended victims. Can the two men escape with their lives (and everything else) intact? And who else is involved in the tale?
The Cast and Performances
Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannell play Lawrence and Adam, and are very convincing as victims of a horrible revenge plot. They play their respective characters in a suspenseful manner, and are helped by the mood of the film and the helplessness of the situation. There is good support from Dina Meyer as Kerry, and Danny Glover stands out as Detective David Tapp, on the search for Jigsaw's lair. Ken Leung plays Detective Steven Sing.
My Opinion
This film had me transfixed from start to finish. There is a kind of knock on effect throughout the whole film, and I was left feeling that the whole concept had been so thoroughly thought out that it could not have been more complicated. Yet director James Wan manages to take us through it with comprehension. There is an incredible twist to the tale, which was the icing on the cake for me. I was amazed by this film. The acting is superb, with the desperation shown throughout by the characters in horrible predicaments coming through powerfully to the viewer.
Many people will find the nature of the film too much. As a warning, I will say that Jigsaw is an extremely creepy character, and the torturous horror focused on in the film is harrowing at times. This did not dissuade me from enjoying a very well made film, but I can easily see how others may turn away.

Advantages: Gore and horror with gripping suspense throughout, a movie full to the brim of twists and turns. Very compelling. Disadvantages: Being pedantic the acting isn't the greatest. Nothing outstanding, but its a horror movie and you watch it for the gore.
