In the summer of 2006 Saw 3 reached the news headlines, people were vomiting and passing out in the cinemas because of the extreme nature of the movie. Of the back of this publicity over night all cinemas were given a trimmed down version of the movie from the producers, who obviously did not want the movie to get banned in this country. So after three nights of screenings, it was only an edited version that the UK public got to see. With the release of Saw 3: The Extreme Edition the UK public are now going to see what caused such a furore. On such a legendary event how could I resist seeing this movie?
I saw Saw and thoroughly enjoyed its graphic nature, but for various reasons Saw 2 just slipped me by; so in a manner I'd never advise I went straight from the original to the third and final outing "allegedly". I can not emphasise the point, don't do this see all the movies and especially don't consider watching this version if you have not seen the original; as a key scene in the third movie may throw you into some serious confusion.
Lynn is on the verge of a massive crisis; her marriage is in tatters and there is something far deeper bothering her that we are not privy to initially. Having completed her shift as a Doctor in a busy hospital, Lynn is abducted by a sinister figure. Upon awakening she meets John or Jigsaw as he is better known, and his accomplice Amanda. John tells Amanda that he is on the very verge of death, and that if she can keep him alive while a man faces numerous "tests" she will be freed. However if John dies the collar he has just made Amanda lock round her neck will explode blowing her head clean off. In the other part of the same building a man called Eric battles to save several people from horrific traps that will kill them, his prize for completion he will be able to exact revenge on the man that killed his son.
Ok first off are my major criticisms firstly the darkness of the movie, at times you can often not even see what's transpiring before your eyes. Its so dark, crucial; scenes are so dark in fact the only time you get to finally see what's happened is when its all over. Its certainly nothing to do with my television, and having not seen at at the cinema I'm unable to comment on whether this is a print defect on the DVD; but this definitely needs lightening up. My second criticism as I said earlier other 3 or more chapter movies make it so you can join at a later date and catch up especially horror franchises like this one. I feel that there is not sufficient warning to the buyer to indicate the importance of seeing the prequels.
On to the plus points, the movie movies at an epic speed; I mean legendary. You just don't get chance to catch your breath. At the beginning I suspect the story ties up a couple of ends from Saw 2 (though I could be mistaken) and your almost into a realm where the action packed finale has happened right at the start of the movie. When you get to the end however your under no false illusions as to where the movie ends. The thing about Saw 3 with the exception of the nature of the trilogy, quality wise it stands out on its own. The first Saw had a ending that made you almost cry out at the screen, Saw 3 repeats this but leaves you dead cold to the touch, a real shiver shot down my spine at its conclusion.
The above being said I never found the movie either scary or particularly graphic, I suspect I identified the two areas that received the negative reports. But in fairness if you like your horror movies you'll think nothing of this. Its more the plot that got me going as apposed to the gore . So if you're a gorehound can I just advise you not to go hunting this down for the so called horrific nature of the movie.
Although I appreciate she was in the 2nd movie, which I missed and briefly in the first; I was extremely pleased to see the return of 80's actress Shawnee Smith who's career I followed from The Blob but seemed to disappear without a trace after The Shining (1997). As Amanda she creates moral and ethical dilemma's in Johns grand plan of things, You see John likes to play vicious games, but morally his games have purpose and the endings or not of his victims are almost "justified". Amanda seems to be achieving the wrong kind of buzz from these games and might not be playing along with John's text book rules of "the game". Amanda clings to John, she needs him and loves him. The arrival of Lynn and a softer more agreeable side to John is exposed, why is she not the one to be exposing this is a issue that causes her some intense pain. And from this point you remember (those who know who she is) what an underestimated actress Shawnee is.
The movie is likely to offend some, especially the nature of the "games". Watching someone rip through their own skin to release themselves of their chains. Or to saw or hack off their own feet in order to survive is also not everyone's idea of great viewing material. But the logic of these "games" is well handled. And if nothing else other than the twisted meanings of these "games" to be revealed its worth a viewing.
Saw 3: Extreme Edition has no special features but does have a trailer hidden in the audio set up section, just highlight the icon that appears to be there as decoration.
The DVD is released on 26th February priced £12.99 from play.com
Advantages: It presents a complete picture… Disadvantages: … but it's too gory; more than the other sequels
Saw III [film only]
I was drinking cranberry juice while watching Saw III again… yes, I was actually drinking a red juice while hearing bones being crushed, muscles being torn, and blood splashing on people's faces. Yummy, but I wonder where this is going to lead me. When you begin watching Saw III, you will only see a series of terribly gory scenes, and definitely wonder what you have gotten yourself into. But if you give the film a chance, you'll ... ...The good thing about Saw III is that it answers a number of questions that you might have, rather than just posing more questions and leaving unfinished business as the other sequels do. At the end of this film, you are actually fooled into believing that this is the last Saw sequel; by now we know it isn't. It also deals with believable issues; you might agree with Jigsaw that people should learn to let go. I have to say here that I do not condone ...

Advantages: Great music, good twist, and very interesting Disadvantages: Ultra violent, banned in several countries
...illustrate their ethics.
Saw Three for those of you who do not know is the third film in a blood saturated trilogy. If you haven't seen the other two- especially the first one, then I would hazard that the film won't make all that much sense in it's conclusion for you, though parts of it can be watched without any preknowledge of the movies. Just in case those of you reading haven't seen either of the previous films, I'll give you a swift rundown ... ...a twist in every film. Saw 2 throws more victims into the mix, a bigger twist and a lot more gore.
Now before I start on the movie proper, I just want to get started on one thing that really bugs me about this trilogy, and that is John (the serial killer.) He vehemnantly denies being a murderer, indeed claims to hate murderers, and claims he does not kill his victims, he just tests their dedication to the life. Could someone tell this man that from ...

Saw 3 is the last of a trilogy about a man called Jigsaw. He is a sick psychopath who thinks up new ways to completely destroy the unfortunate individuals who he makes his victims.
The story is hard to follow if you haven't watched the previous films and in my opinion is better than Saw 2 but still not up to the standard of the original Saw.
Story: The evil puppet-master Jigsaw a.k.a. John Kramer is at work again. But there's a twist. He is dying ... ...his evil games that we saw in Saw 1. She has completely transformed and now has even more of a sick mind than Jigsaw himself. Jigsaw tests her but she fails. The games she plays are unwinnable, her "subjects merely victims".
Jigsaw claims that he is not a murderer and goes as far to say that he despises them. He says that he doesn't kill his victims, he just helps them to appreciate their life. Amanda kidnaps a doctor who must keep him alive to ...

Advantages: Another great film in the Saw franchise Disadvantages: Can't think of any!
Saw 3 is the second sequel in this brilliant horror series, it was released in late 2006 a year after Saw 2. This is by far the most inventive film & also looks like the end of the film franchise as Jigsaw is on his death bed & eventually dies but of course is sheer Jigsaw fashion the games don't stop there.
This film follows on from Amanda's 'friendship' with Jigsaw in her helping him with his sick games & also helping him survive his Cancer. Jigsaw ... ...another great film from the Saw franchise which like the others holds your attention brilliantly & has a lot of little twists throughout the film. The directors of these films love to keep you guessing & unlike some films which can be predictable this is the complete opposite. This film is as shocking as the rest of them. ...

Advantages: Extreme Edition Disadvantages: ending lets you down
...brutal, bloodthirsty horror of 2006; Saw 3. My first encounter with the movie was after Christmas as I had just been introduced to saw 2 by my sci-fi fanatic sister. I must admit when I first heard I thought ok this sounds cheesy and as the movie continued I was gradually proved right. Many parts of the movie were fantastically filmed and superbly acted but other areas proved the theory that number one in a trilogy is always the best. The movie starts ... ...hospital but as she goes on with her day she gets more outlandish whilst in surgery. When her shift finishes Lynn is attacked by a bizarre figure. When she awakes she is met with a man who is clearly on his death bed and she later becomes aware that he is the dreaded Jigsaw or as he is addressed in this movie; John. At this time she is also met with 'The Game.' Jigsaw's assistant Amanda cautiously places what seems to be another torture device only ...

Advantages: A fantastic, clever film, great acting! Disadvantages: A very sick film, overflowing with gore!!!!
to the point where you stopped watching without having to search throughout the whole DVD.
Then there are the special features on the DVD. There is a short film about the traps of Saw3, which shows how each trap was designed and made, and how they thought up of the trap.
Then there is a film about the props of Saw3, which shows how all the gruesome props of the film were made.
Then there are also deleted scenes from the films, theatrical and teaser trailers, and then there are 3 commentaries for the director, writer and producers!
The DVD really has some great features, and all of the short films on it are quite interesting!!!
The Extremeedition of Saw3 costs about £15, but you could get it a bit cheaper off a few websites!!

Advantages: Quickly Over Disadvantages: MTV filmmaking at it's worst
the film in garish green colour tones and as many drunken monkey edits as he can.
Performance wise, everything is acceptable. Marky Mark's brother turns up from the second film and probably get's the best scenes. In all honesty I found all the traps in this one devoid of tension and design. The intent seemed to be purely on gore rather than having you on the edge of your seat.
IF you like the franchise then there's some good backstory but in the grand scheme of horror franchises this is nowhere near the top. And by the way I saw the twist coming pretty quickly.

I have to admit that despite the garish colour scheme of the film, it looks pretty good on dvd with a crisp transfer and great handling of all the action scenes which mainly take place in darkness. The film's soundtrack also creates some great atmospherics within ...
Advantages: Soo much gore! Disadvantages: Confusing ending (for me anyway lol)
This film does not dissapoint at all! Even more gory than the first two which you would think is not possible but believe me it is! I love gory films but even this made me cringe and turn away at some points! The film is again based around the dying 'Jigsaw' and his sidekick Amanda who play yet more distubing games with people who need to learn a valuable lesson in life. This time the games are bigger and much more disturbing! There is a great twist at the end which i didnt think was very predictble at all! It all seems to end a bit quick though and i was left a bit confused and had too sit and think about it for a while afterwards and it seems like there needs to be a Saw 4 to finish it off! But overall i loved this film better than the first two! ...

DVD Description
In 2004, a low-budget horror film about a man who put people with moral failings into grisly, murderous situations became a huge hit. In 2005, the sequel scored again, upping the body count and the terror. In 2006, the franchise continued, with plenty of gore as well as an emotional story line that delved into the psychological makeup of the main characters. As SAW II concluded, Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) was dying. But that doesn't mean his penchant for playing games of torture and violence is ending. In SAW 3, the murders start occurring again, and Kerry (Dina Meyer) is back on the case, although she thinks this time it might be the work of a copycat. She's only partly right: Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the only victim to have survived both movies, has joined Jigsaw as his apprentice, leading the way through a terrifying game involving Lynn (Bahar Soomekh), a doctor in an unhappy marriage, and Jeff (Angus Macfadyen), a distraught man who is having trouble getting over the loss of his son (Stefan Georgiou) at the hands of a drunk driver. Amanda has captured Lynn and placed her in a neck brace that is linked to Jigsaw's heart monitor; she must keep Jigsaw alive or else the brace will explode. Meanwhile, Jeff is sent on a dangerous journey on which he faces all the people involved in the light penalty his boy's killer received--and it is up to him whether he will seek vengeance or offer forgiveness. Helmed by SAW II director Darren Lynn Bousman and written by original SAW screenwriter and star Leigh Whannell (with a story by Whannell and SAW director James Wan), SAW 3 is an intricately designed, gruesome thriller with a hard-driving soundtrack featuring songs by Slayer, Helmet, and All that Remains.
