Advantages: A very poignant movie Disadvantages: The plot is a bit thin
...risk in the hope of saving just one man, the group of 8 men enter occupied France in the hope of finding and rescuing Private Ryan. Finally finding Ryan after several battles with German troops, and the loss of 2 of their soldiers whilst in battle, they find themselves torn between killing the Germans that they were trained to do or taking Ryan back to safety.

With Steven Spielberg at the directional ... ...the story is that of saving private Ryan, the film has in fact four clear sections which work brilliantly to build up the story of the actual rescue mission but also attempts to educate you on what life was like for the soldiers in the war.
The initial thread, and probably one of the most memorable scenes in cinematic history, is the initial assault on Omaha beach during the D-day landings. This scene, although not relevant to the overall story ...

Saving Private Ryan
"In the last great invasion, of the last Great War, the greatest danger for eight men…..was saving one."
This film starts with a bang, literally, on the beaches of World War 2's historic D-Day invasion, a very intense and moving scene. If you are at all squeamish this is not really a film for you as, the beginning in particular and actually much of the rest of film is brutal and bloody and features blood, guts and missing limbs, ... ...look past all the gore to experience this wonderful movie.
This 1998 film is described as a poignant and powerful homage to the soldiers of WW2. Like I said it starts on the beaches depicting the D-Day landings. If you are not familiar with the D-Day landings they are described as the first operations of the Allied Powers' invasion of Normandy, also known as Operation Neptune and Operation Overlord, during World War II. D-Day for the operation, ...

...to be part of the saving of the world from Adolf Hitler and his axis of evil. Many fall along the way, will many survive? Well we know some will, its a war film made by the yanks, they have to 'save the day' don't they?
Throughout the film we have lots of fantastic acting from Hanks and the rest of his company, as well as some haunting parts played by the German soldiers, where a sense of hatred yet compassion is built up, as you end up feeling ... ...scenery and music lends to the powerfulness of the movie, at the start you really can't see the purpose of risking the lives of 8 men, just to save Private Ryan, but by the end you can truly understand why the did it, if not for Mrs Ryan to give her one remaining son, but for a sense of humanity that perhaps something decent could come out of such a terrible situation, and even make a few lost lives to accomplish the greater goal a worthwhile exercise.

They said it paid a fitting tribute to their fallen brothers in arms and that no-one else had ever come this close to replicating the feeling of what they went through.
At first I only watched this film in 30 minute segments as after the films opening on the Normandy beaches I felt that I would need some fresh air before watching ...

Advantages: Visceral Portrayal of heroism and war Disadvantages: Bloody, sometimes jingoistic.
Saving Private Ryan opens onto an old man walking up to a war grave. We quickly assess that it's in France, and from the age of the man, it's Second World War. He walks to a particular grave, and then falls to his knees, his family rushing behind him to his aid.
We then travel back in time, to 6th June 1944: the day of the D-Day landings. It's Omaha beach, and the amphibious troop carriers are advancing to the beach. What follows is a harrowing ... ...as an aside. However, with Saving Private Ryan, it's something to mention from the start. Steven Spielberg seems to have stumbled across a whole new way of filming war. His methods really bring to the screen the viscerality of the situation. And having watched the film repeatedly, I think that this is in no small way down to the sound recording. It's simply fantastic. Right from the start, where you can hear the furling of the flag in the wind, through ...

Advantages: Great Acting Disadvantages: Too much blood and guts
...SavingPrivateRyan stars Tom Hanks as a military leader, who is sent on a mission after being in Normandy, to find a boy that has three brothers that were recently killed in the war, and the Military personnel in charge wanted PrivateRyan back to his mother, so she wouldn’t grieve so much. A group of people had to go on the mission, and many died, but PrivateRyan survived. It is a very dramatic story which really gets you involved, and the actors are brilliant, this film should only be for adults, because there is a lot of blood and guts....

DVD Description
Director Steven Spielberg's World War II tour de force chronicles the journey of a GI squad on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Led by Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks), the unit is under orders to track down a soldier, Private Ryan (Matt Damon), so he might return home to his mother in America, where she is grieving the unimaginable loss of her three other sons to the war. The first unforgettable 20 minutes of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN realistically and horrifically depicts the Normandy invasion as Miller. his second-in-command, Sergeant Horvath (Tom Sizemore), and the others in the unit land at Omaha Beach. Before the film began shooting, Hanks and the actors in his squad went through a one-week boot camp in the woods. All the actors, except Hanks, wanted to quit, but Hanks rallied their spirits by reminding them of the incredible tribulations endured by the real veterans of World War II. Production designer Tom Sanders found a beach in Ireland that perfectly matched the landscape of Normandy's. Spielberg gave great credit to the Irish army who helped re-create the Omaha Beach scenes.
