Save The Last Dance/Save The Last Dance 2 [2001]
Save the Last DanceSave the Last Danceenjoyed a profitable release in early 2001, with ... more
box-office earnings that exceeded anyone's
expectations. Its performance illustrates the
staying power of a formulaic movie that avoids the
pitfalls and clichés that would otherwise render
it forgettable. Since there's nothing new here,
you'll appreciate the original quirks in a
character-based plot that's just around the corner
fromFlashdance, and just as familiar. Sara (Julia
Stiles) gave up a promising ballet career when her
mother was killed while rushing to attend her
daughter's crucial audition to Juilliard; Sara
blames herself for the accident, and at her new,
mostly African American high school in Chicago,
she's uncertain of her future.Derek (Sean Patrick
Thomas) has no such doubts; his own future is
bright, and his attraction to Sara is immediate;
they connect (predictably), and Sara's dormant
funk emerges, with Derek's coaching, as she learns
hip-hop dancing in a local club. Obligatory
subplots are equally routine: Derek's sister
(Kerry Washington) is a single mum struggling with
her child's absentee father; Derek's best friend
(Fredro Starr) feels trapped in his gangsta
lifestyle; and Sara's once-estranged father (Terry
Kinney) is doing his best to correct past
mistakes. Within the confines of this standard
follow-your-dream drama, director Thomas Carter
capitalises on a script that allows these
characters to be real, intelligent, and thoughtful
about their lives and their futures. It's obvious
that Stiles's dancing was intercut with that of a
professional double, but that illusion hardly
matters when the rest of the movie's so earnestly
positive and genuine. --Jeff Shannon

not like the first
Review of Save The Last Dance 2 DVD by jo_field26

Advantages: great dancing
Disadvantages: not a carry on from the 1st film

After a long wait and being a fan if the first film and soundtrack, it was a film that I definitely had to see and I can say that it is not a match on the first film. It continues the story of Sara, although originally played by Julia Stiles, Sara is now played by Izabella Miko. Also in the last film Sara boyfriend is Derek who is not in this sequel. So I do not really think this is a sequel, more like a film that has carried on the storyline, but ...
...do not think has worked too well. Continuing the story of the original film where Sara follows her dream and becomes a student at Juilliard, where Sara manages to become a star pupil of whom her dance teachers has great ideas for her. Unfortunately Sara becomes torn between her love for ballet and her passion for the urban dance. To add more confusion Sara meets Miles a musician, whom writes some music and asks Sara to put together a dance for ... Read review

Save The Last Dance 2
Review of Save The Last Dance 2 DVD by Feona-xo

Advantages: Choreography & Cast
Disadvantages: None

When I first seen that there was a sequel to one of my all time favourite dance films I couldn't wait to see it. Until I noticed it was different people playing the roles. However, I still wanted to see what Sara Johnston would do after getting into Julliard. So I decided to rent it. The Sequel is all about Sara Johnston and the adventures she finds at Julliard, the school she dreamed of attending ever since she realised she could dance. The film ...
...a former pupil of Julliard, Miles. She helps him out by choreographing a dance piece for a piece of music for a show he's in but when she find out the truth about Miles' Family will she be so keen to help him? Pick up a copy to find out. It's worth it! When it finished I thought it gave the first film a run for it's money! It was so much better than I expected. I was that impressed that I went out and bought it for only £9.99 which to me was excellent. ... Read review

the sequel - saved by the dance
Review of Save The Last Dance 2 DVD by pinkfairie

Advantages: great choreography
Disadvantages: flaws in plots and characters

So, as a lover of all things dance, when I saw the sequel to arguably one of the most successful dance films, I immediately went to purchase it to add to my collection. The first film, 'Save the last dance' introduced Sarah as a heartbroken teen moving to a tough neighbourhood as a result of her mothers death. She blames herself for the tradgedy due to her 'forcing' her to attend her audition for Juilliard. Rushing results in a car crash and Sarah ...
...film we see her slowly being persuaded to take up her dream again by boyfriend 'Derek'. His influence along with that of hip-hop, (the pulse of the area she now lives in), she finds a new way of adapting her dance which eventually results in her being sucessful in her second audition for Julliard. 'Save the last dance 2' follows Sarah as she embarks on her quest to excel at Julliard as a ballet dancer. In typical 'Save the last dance' style we have ... Read review

DVD Description

Straight-to-video sequel to the 2001 dance-drama blockbuster SAVE THE LAST DANCE. Izabella Miko steps into Julia Stiles' pointe shoes as aspiring ballerina Sara Johnson, who leaves her Chicago ghetto to study dance at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, under the tutelage of dance instructor Monique Delacroix (Jacqueline Bisset). As the story unfolds, Sara tangles with a jealous rival (Maria Brooks) and falls for a young professor (Columbus Short), ensuring that the sequel is awash with the same brand of passion and drama that made its parent film such a hit.
