It is said, Clichés are clichés because they are true. Well if you want to see 2 hours of clichés this is the film for you. I had rented it via the internet so there was no great cost involved in me seeing it, however had I paid £10 at the cinema I don't think I would have been as pleased. I had actually been wanting to see this for ages & hasn't got around to it, anyway........
To save you reading all of this, if this quote appeals to you then read on
Dirk Pitt: I'm sorry, I don't speak English. Gunboat Officer: You are speaking English right now. Dirk Pitt: No, I only know how to say, "I don't speak English" in English.
Its based on 1 of 16 Clive Cussler novels about a character called Dirk Pitt, ex-marine/navy seal ( I forget) and modern day treasure hunter. So far, so many clichés. Cue storyline revolving around a treasure Pitt has been searching for most of his treasure hunting life & beautiful damsel in distress trying to save the world (Penelope Cruz).
The search for the treasure leads them to Morocco & they obviously get entangled in Cruz's 'plague' storyline so they can save the day, win the girl & take home the moolah. From reading the blurb on the box I recognised Cruz & William h Macy so I was surprised to see Lambert Wilson (the French baddie from matrix2) playing the baddie again. as poorly.
There isn't too much romance going on between McConaughey / Cruz, there isn't really much buddy buddy going on between McConaughey / Giordino & the 2 baddies aren't really united in badness either. This is the only way the film moves away from the regular action flick formula.
Technically the stunts aren't too over the top, they're as believable as any you find in any Bond movie, mostly implied rather than graphic violence, this along with a lack of strong language make it a safe 13 rating.
This film is bound to be compared to Indiana Jones / national treasure / Tomb raider but to me it was far too romancing the stone without the romance for me to enjoy. If there's ever a sequel I hope they develop the storylines a little better because at 124 minutes this one lost a lot in its adaptation.
