Jim Street (Colin Farrell) and his partner Gamble (Jeremy Renner) are members of a Los Angles S.W.A.T. unit (Special Weapons and Tactics). Gamble is a bit headstrong; when he disobeys orders (but saves the hostage) at a bank robbery he puts both of their careers in danger. The very arrogant, Capt. Fuller (Larry Poindexter) wants to demote them for their activity - Gamble quits the force but Street is willing to take his lumps in the off chance that he can rejoin S.W.A.T but he's going to have to shine a lot of boots and clean a bunch of guns before that's going to happen.
"Hondo" (Samuel L. Jackson) comes back under Fuller, and is given the opportunity to recruit and train 5 cops for a new S.W.A.T. team. "Hondo" rounds up the best of the best - 2 guys he has already worked with, Boxer (Brian Van Holt) and T.J. (Josh Charles), the very tough Officer Chris Sanchez (Michelle Rodriguez), the very fast and well-defined Officer Deke Kay (LL Cool J), and yes he picks Street to be on his team too. They experience hard training period where not only the pretend bad guys out are to get them but so is Capt. Fuller.
The real test for this crew happens when Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez) an international drug is being transported and he publicly announces that he will pay anyone $100 million dollars to get him out of jail (wow - that makes the Monopoly Get out of Jail Free card look silly). You can see the mercenaries drool with visions of the big payoff. LA gangs have gotten better equipped; they set out to free Alex with everything from AK-47's, rocket launchers and Claymore bombs. The S.W.A.T. guys are going to need to use more of the T. if they are going to safely deliver their prisoner.
S is for the Sexy way they train them W is for the Washboard abs on LL Cool J A is for the Action scenes that thrill us T is for the Tragic flaw called dialog
The cast is hot and talented; the training sequences are very entertaining, the chase has its merits but the dialog is pretty lame and detracts from all of the pluses. Samuel is perfect as Hondo except it's hard to believe the lines he has to deliver. This is true for pretty much the entire cast. We like all of these people; we like the premise but the end result missed a bit. It's an OK movie that you can wait to see at home.
