Advantages: none other than Winona Ryder was in it Disadvantages: the story
...I was really looking forward to this film - firstly its a horror film (and I love horror films) and secondly it had Winona Ryder in!!
The film starts with Ryder being invited along to an exorcism on a mental patient. Through flashbacks you learn that she was once the subject of exactly the same treatment. The exorcism complete - though not neccessarily successful - Ryder's character steals the books the patient had been writing in and begins to decode the numeric coded scribblings.
Having decoded the ramblings of this supposed possessed inmate - who is now comatose after a stroke - she finds that Ben Chaplin is to become the reincarnation of the Devil. Chaplin's character is a sceptic who writes books about mass murderers. Having been warned by Ryder and various other lunatic priests and psychics - he starts to believe and ... well...

Advantages: Francis Ford Coppola Disadvantages: none
...This 1992 version of the Bram Stoker novel is different from the previous Dracula movies that were made in 1931, 1958 and 1979. The visual style is stunning and I just love they way they handled the characters.
Without a doubt the best thing about this movie is Gary Oldman in his role as the blood sucking count from Transylvannia. His Dracula is like a mix of the scary looking Nosferatu from "Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens" and the gentleman and sensual Dracula played by Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee in the earlier versions. The result is a Dracula that we can both fear and feel for. Yes, Gary Oldman really is my favorite Dracula (although not the best). The sequences between Oldman and Winona Ryder are really steamy, that was quite some passion on screen!
The movie handles all of the characters very well. All of the classic...

Advantages: cinematography Disadvantages: story, lack of chemistry between leads
...I saw this 'tearjerker' on a flight coming back from New Zealand in February, and frankly I'd not given it a second thought since I saw an advert in the paper for it and thought 'my god, they've released it in the cinema?'. Frankly it's a straight to video, or straight to the TV to be honest.
However, with heavyweights like Richard Gere and Winona Ryder playing the leads, what else can you expect. Even Elaine Strich thrown in for good measure who plays Ryder's grandmother.
Set in New York (unsurprisingly given the title) it starts with Ryder celebrating a twenty-something birthday and Gere then appears on the screen. He'd previously dated her late mother, and of course Granny (Strich) is less than happy when Gere starts pursuing Ryder. His reputation as a womanising self-centred restauranteur doesn't exactly make him family...
