I managed to see this film when it came out in New York and what a light-hearted treat. 'Russian Dolls' (Les Poupées Russes) is the sequel to the student exchange story in 'The Spanish Apartment' ('L' Auberge espagnole'). The film follows protagonist Xavier, almost thirty years-old and struggling as a screenwriter trying to make something of his career. He's moved on from the fun-filled student days to reach the crisis of being almost thirty and still wondering whether he'll bank that dream job as a writer before meeting the perfect girl. The story brings Xavier back in contact with old friends, five years after the Barcelona exchange programme and raises questions about the desperate search for a settled relationship. Director Cedric Klapisch has works wonders through the many relationships that seem set on uneasy ground - often becoming recipes for disaster - composing compelling disjointed shots and sprinkling the film with quirky extravagance and hilarity.

This film stands alone - so if you haven't seen 'The Spanish Apartment' you won't be losing out. With a well-rounded array of characters, this film will hold your interest, as it tours between Paris and London before flying to the Russian wedding in Moscow. If you are not keen on subtitles do not be put off as there is a hefty amount of English dialogue in this French speaking film.

With appearances from the delightful Audrey Tautou and English born Kelly Reilly, this film proves to be a perfect ingredient of a comically playful visual performance.
