Advantages: Great performances, interesting characters, another good movie from Wes Disadvantages: None
...at the prestiguous private school Rushmore Academy. He's a pretty clever guy, for a 15 year old, in some respects, having started or having involvement in innumerous clubs and societies within the school but unfortunately his grades don't show that and if he doesn't improve soon, he may be expelled. Everything changes, however, when he ends up falling for first grade teacher Miss Cross (played by Olivia Williams). However, he isn't the only one interested ... ...feature a fellow pupil at Rushmore academy called Magnus Buchan (played by Stephen McCole, whos been on Taggart, Rebus and Holby City on TV) , who's Scottish, though he plays a bully, not a very nice guy either... I wonder if there are many priviledged Scots who go to such private schools in the US? I wouldn't know! it would be nice to have had the Scottish character be a nice, friendly person lol I wouldn't want all Americans to think that Scots' ...

Advantages: Intelligent, great performances, quirky. Disadvantages: A little on the short side.
...finally I relented and gave Rushmore a go. I was very happy that I did, as it's a film I enjoyed immensely and felt saddened that I didn't give it a chance earlier.
Rushmore focuses on Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), an intelligent student, but one who has little interest in actually studying. Instead he pours himself into the various clubs at his school, from beekeeping, to fencing, to having his own theatre group. Things become a little more ... ...basic story in itself separates Rushmore from the generic teen dramas or comedies, but the film itself has so much more to offer. Max is a particularly interesting character, as the viewer ends up hating him at times for the way he acts (see the dinner party scene) and yet seems to end up caring about what happens to him. This is largely down to Schwartzman's performance, something that is aided by an excellent supporting cast around him. Before ...

Advantages: Smart humour, great story, Bill Murray's best performance in years Disadvantages:
...should start by saying that Rushmore is a comedy that is not for everyone. It is a brilliant, intelligent story, and the consequence is that the story and humour is often above much of the audience. When I first saw it in the theatre, it was mostly empty, and many of the people I watched it with either fell asleep or left. Don't run away from this movie - give it a chance! The critics did, and it was voted best comedy of the year by nearly everyone. ... ...moments, but they simply serve as a chance to rest between laughs! The humour is smart, dark, and brilliant! The soundtrack is great, with classic Brit Invasion stuff. Watch Rushmore and discover what all the critics were raving about, but most of the public missed, in 1998. ...

Advantages: Unique humour Disadvantages: slow/ uneventful at times
...is a keen student at Rushmore Prep School, but his adventurous personality and huge range of extra curricular hobbies mean that he isn’t getting good grades. He writes and directs school plays, which are absurdly ambitious and complicated, but his high aspirations never seem to get him anywhere. He soon falls in love with Rosemary, a British lower school teacher who “has something you can’t quite put your finger on.” But things go wrong as Herman ... ...very funny.
And thus, Rushmore is an original comedy; simple yet hard to pin down. The story is plain, but the characters are quirky and hilarious, making it an eccentric and unusual flick. It is by no means suited to all tastes, and in some moods I would have disliked it myself, but the film must be appreciated for its style, even if it doesn’t make you laugh. ...

...funny scenes and is entertaining for the audience from start to finish. Olivia Williams plays the love interest to both Murray and Schwartzman's characters, and gives as good as the two male leads. The casting is perfection, the writing is superb and Rushmore still remains one of my favourite films. ...

Actor(s): Jason Schwartzman, Olivia Williams, Bill Murray, Seymour Cassel, Brian Cox, Mason Gamble, Brian Cox, Luke Wilson, Andrew Wilson
Director(s): Wes Anderson
Genre: Drama
Classification: 15 years and over
Production Year: 1998
Running Time: 1 hour 29 minutes
Video Category: Feature Film
Plot: Director Wes Anderson's follow-up to the acclaimed BOTTLE ROCKET is a funny, warmhearted, and extremely sharp American response to the English Angry Young Man films of the 1960s, right down to its British Invasion soundtrack. Newcomer Jason Schwartzman creates a classic protagonist in Max Fischer, a sophomore at Rushmore Academy. He excels at every extracurricular activity in school, from theater to beekeeping. Gradewise, however, he's failing. He has few friends outside school save for wealthy but depressed industrialist Herman Blume (Bill Murray), father of obnoxious twin boys who also attend Rushmore. Enter Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), a beautiful young widowed teacher at Rushmore Elementary. While Max is immediately smitten with Miss Cross, she finds comfort in the company of the emotionally frazzled Blume. But Max won't let Blume have Miss Cross without a fight. Anderson and cowriter Owen Wilson have created a script brimming with oddball humor at the surface, but at its core lies just enough realistic pain and disappointment to create an all-too-rare bittersweet edge, striking a subtle balance that few films ever achieve, and finally giving national treasure Bill Murray the chance to shine like never before. As director, Anderson displays his exceptional talents with careful choices in color palette, effective use of slow motion to comedic effect, and, most important, a brilliant selection of offbeat songs that are integral to the story. Easily one of the finest comedies since THE GRADUATE, RUSHMORE is a monument to brilliant filmmaking.
