Written by Jim Kouf and Ross LaManna, and directed by Brett Ratner Rush Hour was released on 4 December 1998.
****Story line****
A Chinese Official’s daughter is kidnapped and held to ransom. Does not fully trust the American police force and calls in Hong Kong’s finest, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) to rescue her.
Since the kidnapping happened on the Los Angeles Police Department’s turf they send in a typically ‘clumsy’ and ‘lousy’ officer, James Carter (Chris Tucker), to rescue the girl and bring the kidnappers to justice.
Being from two different cultural backgrounds each officer have their own thoughts on policing that are often conflicting. However, each must overcome these differences and work together to get the girl back and solve the case.
****Other characters****
Unfortunately, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker out shines
all the other actors in this film and put the others to shame. Jackie and Chris are this film and the other characters are merely ‘back ground’.
There are loads of other characters in this film, although none are what I consider to be A list, although this is down to a matter of opinion and I am sure there are loads of people that will disagree with me.
None of the other characters are memorable, which is not surprising given that Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker steal the lime light.
****My opinion****
This is one of all my all time favourite films and one that I can watch over and over again and still never get bored of it. Whilst the story line is not original or different by any stretch of the imagination it was the coming together of two cultures that made this film that bit different, and what a combination of characters to use.
Jackie Chan is brilliant in this film. I agree that he may not be the best martial-artist, I think that accolade has to go to Bruce Lee, but he has something that nearly all other martial-artists don’t have. Jackie Chan has charisma and in this film you see the sensitive side, heroic side and the comical side by the bucket load, and to top it all off he even does his own stunts.
Chris Tucker is pure comedy. The way he moves, his mannerisms, his facial expressions and, of course the unique voice, all scream comedy and he was the perfect choice for this role. It was another great choice by the casting crew. Chris plays the stereo-typical ‘black’ pimp really well and adds his own unique style, via his really high pitched voice.
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are fantastic actors in their own right, but together, they are electric. This is a classic case of 2 + 2 = 5. Their on-screen relationship is really inspirational and shows that, even though their cultures are worlds apart, the Eastern and Western world can co-exist. Despite constantly bickering and arguing like a pair of school children the pair are actually loyal to each other and work as a team to solve the case.
The language and communication barriers between Jackie (who does not speak good English in real life) and Chris, in addition to the cultural differences, serves to increase the comical value of this film.
The martial arts aspect is not as intense and hardcore as Bruce Lee films but then it doesn’t need to be. Whilst the moves are not amazing they are still very good and Jackie Chan has added his own and unique style.
Like all comedy films there are some good one-liners, however, unlike many other comedy films there are some great one-liners that, in my opinion, are classics.
****Bonus features****
As with all DVDs nowadays this DVD comes with bonus features, that includes;
i) Out takes ii) Deleted scenes iii) Extended scenes iv) The stunts v) Much more
I have never been a fan of bonus features, preferring to watch the feature film. However, this film really captured my attention and I found it that funny that I thought I would give the bonus features a watch. I am so glad that I did since I even watched the bonus features from start to finish.
This film was released over a decade ago, therefore it can be picked up for very little money. At the time of writing Rush Hour can be bought for £1.99 from Play.com.
At this price it is an absolute bargain and represents great value for money since I believe it is a film that will be watched over and over again.

This is a good movie, but Rush Hour 2 decimates this into a million pieces. That scene where Jackie is pleaing to the fat guy about where the girl was... if it was me there I would have laughed so hard at Jackie's 'acting' I would have vomited all over his face. Ah Jackie, chooses to have a girl's name and can act emotional as well as a horse. Great at action though.
