Written by Jim Kouf and Ross LaManna, and directed by Brett Ratner Rush Hour was released on 4 December 1998.
****Story line****
A Chinese Official’s daughter is kidnapped and held to ransom. Does not fully trust the American police force and calls in Hong Kong’s finest, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) to rescue her.
Since the kidnapping happened on the Los Angeles Police Department’s turf they send in a typically ‘clumsy’ and ‘lousy’ officer, James Carter (Chris Tucker), to rescue the girl and bring the kidnappers to justice.
Being from two different cultural backgrounds each officer have their own thoughts on policing that are often conflicting. However, each must overcome these differences and work together to get the girl back and solve the case.
****Other characters****
Unfortunately, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker out shines all the other actors in this film and put the others to shame. Jackie and Chris are this film and the other characters are merely ‘back ground’.
There are loads of other characters in this film, although none are what I consider to be A list, although this is down to a matter of opinion and I am sure there are loads of people that will disagree with me.
None of the other characters are memorable, which is not surprising given that Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker steal the lime light.
****My opinion****
This is one of all my all time favourite films and one that I can watch over and over again and still never get bored of it. Whilst the story line is not original or different by any stretch of the imagination it was the coming together of two cultures that made this film that bit different, and what a combination of characters to use.
Jackie Chan is brilliant in this film. I agree that he may not be the best martial-artist, I think that accolade has to go to Bruce Lee, but he has something that nearly all other martial-artists don’t have. Jackie Chan has charisma and in this film you see the sensitive side, heroic side and the comical side by the bucket load, and to top it all off he even does his own stunts.
Chris Tucker is pure comedy. The way he moves, his mannerisms, his facial expressions and, of course the unique voice, all scream comedy and he was the perfect choice for this role. It was another great choice by the casting crew. Chris plays the stereo-typical ‘black’ pimp really well and adds his own unique style, via his really high pitched voice.
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are fantastic actors in their own right, but together, they are electric. This is a classic case of 2 + 2 = 5. Their on-screen relationship is really inspirational and shows that, even though their cultures are worlds apart, the Eastern and Western world can co-exist. Despite constantly bickering and arguing like a pair of school children the pair are actually loyal to each other and work as a team to solve the case.
The language and communication barriers between Jackie (who does not speak good English in real life) and Chris, in addition to the cultural differences, serves to increase the comical value of this film.
The martial arts aspect is not as intense and hardcore as Bruce Lee films but then it doesn’t need to be. Whilst the moves are not amazing they are still very good and Jackie Chan has added his own and unique style.
Like all comedy films there are some good one-liners, however, unlike many other comedy films there are some great one-liners that, in my opinion, are classics.
****Bonus features****
As with all DVDs nowadays this DVD comes with bonus features, that includes;
i) Out takes ii) Deleted scenes iii) Extended scenes iv) The stunts v) Much more
I have never been a fan of bonus features, preferring to watch the feature film. However, this film really captured my attention and I found it that funny that I thought I would give the bonus features a watch. I am so glad that I did since I even watched the bonus features from start to finish.
****Price****
This film was released over a decade ago, therefore it can be picked up for very little money. At the time of writing Rush Hour can be bought for £1.99 from Play.com.
At this price it is an absolute bargain and represents great value for money since I believe it is a film that will be watched over and over again.

Advantages: Great Film, great laugh! Disadvantages: Hmmmm...none as yet..
...out last weekend to see Rush Hour 2, having seen Rush Hour in the cinemas and thoroughly enjoyed it, we decided to see Rush Hour 2 which was a great film too.
Anyway, I decided to revisit the first film in its DVD form. Ahhh I bet you thought I was going to about Rush Hour 2 in the wrong category eh? This is my first review and I decided to look around the site reviewing others before I wrote my first review, and I saw that reviews in the wrong ... ...~~~~The Movie~~~~ Rush Hour stars the afore mentionned Jackie Chan, as Detective Inspector Li, a Hong Kong police officer and Chris Tucker, who plays Detective James Carter. Li comes to America after his good friend’s daughter is kidnapped, Chris Tucker is hired by the FBI to keeping Chan away from the case. As the chalk meets the cheese it is obvious we are in for one truly enjoyable ride. Carter and Li are then forced to battle a whole organization ...

Advantages: Good action, easy viewing Disadvantages: Formulaic
‘Rush Hour’ is an amusing diversion but not really much more, based on a formula that has been tried and tested in several police/comedy films down the years, probably most notably in the 1980s Schwarzenegger star vehicle ‘Red Heat’. The main theme of both films is remarkably similar – a policeman from a Communist country is sent to investigate a crime in the USA, he is paired with something of a renegade cop and encounters ... ...to the fore in a lasting partnership that transcends political and cultural boundaries. The plot of the film is not a straight rip-off of ‘Red Heat’ – times have changed and it is probably a safe bet that the producers were not allowed to portray the shiny, new China as some sort of Communist ogre for fear of damaging the burgeoning trade links between the Peoples’ Republic and the United States. The film touches on the return ...

...comes to a film like Rush Hour I immediate feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Excitement? Anticipation? Hardly - more like fear. The elements are all wrong and if ever a movie screamed 'waste of time', this is it. So we can ignore it and carry on watching 'decent' films (such as The Cannonball Run or anything with Sylvia Stallone in it) (apologies, I seem to have been momentarily possessed by the spirit of my own brother just then).
... ...it's easy to see that Rush Hour contains many, many cliche's - the earned respect, the brash US detective and the quiet Asian detective. Yawn, yawn, yawn, we've seen it all before. Now if a film ever sounded as though it was going to be a straight to video movie then this surely must be it. Hell, it's even got Jackie Chan in it, and we all know how niche-y his films tend to be. Do we detect some snobbery here or is there an almighty 'BUT' coming?

Advantages: Funny and fab action Disadvantages: Nothing at all
...going on about the brilliant Rush Hour 2 at the moment, well I haven't seen Rush Hour 2 (YET!!) And until the other day I hadn't seen Rush Hour either! I'd heard of Rush Hour, it sounded a pretty good action movie, but I'd never actually got round to seeing it! A few days back now I watched it on Digital and I was very impressed, can't wait to see the second one now! Here is my review on the film itself... PLOT The film starts with the introduction ... ...you haven't already seen Rush Hour, then I highly suggest that you do! It's worth a watch and will entertain you highly! You can buy and rent the film on both VHS and DVD. The film is also on digital movie channels on a regular basis. Thanks and cheers. ~M~ ...

Advantages: It's a brief 80-minutes, Chan is great Disadvantages: Tucker is more annoying than ever, thin tired plot
...that kind of spend. Ratner does his usual solid but uninspiring direction yet he seems to be under the illusion that his name carries some weight with an audience, well Mr Ratner you are not a Scorcese or a Spielberg, once you've made something of note then may be you can have your name in big letters on the poster and have voice over man announce your name on the trailer. But until then lacklustre efforts such as this and your take on X-Men simply don't cut the mustard.
This franchise should now be closed because when you even struggle to fill 80-minutes of screentime then you know the game is up.

RushHour 3 is shown in widescreen and gives you a nice crisp picture throughout. The film also has some good moments that utilize the surround sound of a home cinema, it's not one to show off the home cinema but you get ample...

Advantages: Great acting from Chris Tucker and excellent stunts from Jackie Chan Disadvantages: Not enough stunts, not the greatest plot, vague conclusion
...could be more stunts. The plot of the film in my opinion isn't the most original or most endeering, but the acting certainly makes up for it. I also believe that another RushHour must be coming out due to the very vague conclusion of the film which leaves the viewer thinking is this really the end?
The DVD which I purchased came with two discs:
Disc 1:
- Optional Commentary by director Brett Ratner and writer Jeff Nathanson
- Theatrical Trailer
- RushHour 3
Disc 2:
- Outtakes (very, very funny)
- Deleted scenes,/Alternate Ending with optional comedy by director Brett Ratner and writer Jeff Nathanson
- Making of RushHour 3 featurettes
- Visual Effects Reel
- "Le RushHour Trois" Production Diary
- Easter Egg
This Brett Ratner film is enjoyable and hilarious, however people over the age of 16 may not enjoy it that much...

...A wise man once said; “sequels are whore’s movies”. Still, another wise man probably said “Oh no, I’ve sh*t myself again", so you can’t exactly rely on what they have to say. What you CAN rely on is that if Hollywood has managed to make an unexpected amount of money on an action flick, odds are that they’ll bump out another sequel before you can say, “I wonder if they’ll make a sequel to that?” So, while we await “Pearl Harbour 2 – This Time It’s Personal”, let’s all turn our brains to fun and check out the DVD release of RushHour 2 – This Time It’s Really Personal, Honest Guv'ner.
