“Prepare for a second rush…”
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker return in the follow up the 1998 blockbuster action/comedy film. Jackie Chan plays Chief Inspector Lee of the Royal Hong Kong Police who in the first film went to LA to search for the missing daughter of good friend. During his time in LA he was teamed up with Chris Tucker who plays Detective James Carter and become friends during their investigation. At the end of the first film James Carter went to Hong Kong on a much-needed holiday, this is where this film continues.
On the hunt for a good time and sampling some of the city’s exotic delights Carter is getting increasingly frustrated with Lee’s continual acceptance of cases. Lee accepts his biggest case of all, continuing his fathers last case, a smuggling ring for counterfeit $100 notes. The prime suspect is his father’s ex-partner Ricky Tan played by John Lone, now a member of the triads.
Lee and Carter’s search takes them to a karaoke bar
owned by Tan, where Carter does a great performance of a Michael Jackson song and tells the bar to pick up their samurai swords and shave his butt (he is struggling with the language). Here they meet Tan’s second in charge Hu Li played by Zhang Ziyi (Starred in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), a martial arts expert and deadly assassin. Their adventure takes them to a massage parlour owned by Tan, full of beautiful women Carter is in his element, until he picks a fight with a room full of triads and ends up running around Hong Kong stark naked. And so on to the gambling capitol of the world in search of the counterfeiters, where they meet Agent Isabella Molina played by Roselyn Sanchez, an undercover agent who has infiltrated the gang. And so the scene is set for an action packed ride full of laughs.
The director of the first film, Brett Ratner, returns to direct this follow up film. Although not having many other titles to his credit, The Family Man being the most recent, his hands-on approach works well in this and the first Rush Hour film. He has a lot more to battle with in this film, stars that do not speak English, filming in a foreign land and Chris Tucker. Even with this new challenges he seems to get the best out of the two main stars and having done the first film, knows what he wants as to the portrayal of the characters.
I have to admit to not being the greatest of fans of Jackie Chan, but like the way he uses everyday items within his fight scenes. He seems to work better in films when he can bounce the comedy off a co-star as in the first Rush Hour and also Shanghai Noon. On saying this both the Rush Hour films are excellent with great performances, which have renewed his career worldwide, making him a true international celebrity.
Chris Tucker is his normal over the top character in the film, a type of role that suits him very well. His role as Ruby Rhod the “chat show host” from the Fifth Element set him up well with this style of character. His mannerisms and deliverance of the lines is great, although his voice can get annoying sometimes.
Supporting roles are well done through out the film, especially by Roselyn Sanchez and Zhang Ziyi; both actresses have little previous film credits to their name but stand out as people to watch out for in the future. John Lone, who plays a good role as Ricky Tan also Alan King who plays Steven Reign the rich backer of the counterfeit ring, provide other support. All in all well done to everyone for their performances.
The martial arts scenes are very well directed as well as choreographed. I enjoy a good fighting film so I may be slightly biased but felt they combined the fighting as well as comedy extremely well. Jackie Chan has a reputation of doing most of his own stunts, the fact he has broken most of the bones in his body at some stage or another is evidence of this. This ability of doing his own stunts means the flow of the film and the scenes involved is much smoother and more enjoyable to watch. Overall the film is well put together and very enjoyable to watch.
Enjoy action? Enjoy a good laugh? If so give it a go, you do not need to have watched the first film but I would also recommend it as a good film as well.
Enjoy, Andy.
