Having seen the trailers for Run fat Boy Run on television I decided to see it at the cinema on release and subsequently purchased the DVD when it came out in February. The film is fantastic and anybody who has seen and enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and particularly Hot Fuzz is sure to love this! Primarily a romantic comedy the film is very funny and is sure to be a hit with all of the family. The script is excellent and the acting by notable cast members of high standard.
Story: The film follows the life of Dennis Doyle, a store security guard who five years ago was to marry his pregnant fiancée Libby, however he got cold feet and left months before the wedding. On finding out that Libby had started seeing another guy (Whit) - he realises he still loves her and begins his quest to get her back. After finding that Whit is to run a marathon, the unfit and overweight Dennis decides he is to run the race too, a statement which he has trouble believing and so do his friends!
Things go from bad to worse for Dennis when Whit proposes to Libby at her birthday party which Dennis was present at. She accepts his invitation of marriage, adding to Dennis's misery and making him extremely depressed. This happens just days before the race day, but he decides he is to run anyway even though he is really down in the dumps, plus if he doesn't complete the race he will be evicted from his house and have to give all his money too his best mate Gordon. Both of these deals he constructed months beforehand as a motivational aid to help his training.
The day of the race arrives with Whit and Dennis choosing to start together on the race line. For the first few miles there isn't much between the two of them, but then Whit pulls a dirty stunt and purposely trips Dennis up. An ambulance is seen arriving as he is apparently quite badly injured and in need of some urgent medical attention. Whit continues the race knowing what he has done, but at this point only he and Dennis know exactly what has happened. With Dennis injured and on the floor and the much fitter Whit jogging on ahead the race looks done and dusted, but there is quite a twist coming up, but I shan't reveal it for those of you who haven't already seen the film. All I will say is that the ending is brilliant.
My thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Not only was the storyline very interesting and well scripted but the whole thing was very humorous and entertaining throughout. There were some impressive performances, notably from Simon Pegg and Thandie Newton. I would definitely recommend purchasing the DVD.
