...and proper under the military rules of engagement, or whether he acted in haste.
The film is essentially a game of two halves - the first half of the film is action-packed, from the opening scenes right through to the terrible climax of the Yemen Embassy incident. Thereafter the pace of the plot slows down to such an extent that the film struggles to hold your attention. Unlike other films that climax in a courtroom, there are no real twists or ... ...accept the idea that these rules may not be acceptable to civilian values, Rules of Engagement seems to suggest that anything goes if you are under fire. The film would have worked better if there had been more action throughout the whole movie. The contrast between the action, and the calm is so stark that even the most patient viewer will ultimately find this film anti-climactic. There were lots of good ideas here, but the end product was simply ...

Advantages: A great Idea for a film Disadvantages: Not really as good as it could have been.
...my eye was drawn towards Rules Of Engagement, not really sure why but it carries on nicely with the war theme, which seems to be developing through my latest ops. This time the destination is Yemen. The film is more of a courtroom Drama than an all out guns blazing make the American army look really good type of film. Of course unlike Black Hawk Down this is purely a film on true story or book adaptations here. It centres on the Court case of US ... ...the crowd had weapons. The Rules of Engagement state that unless you are being fired on then you are not allowed to open fire on large groups. As no weapons have been found there is no other option but to court marshal Childers as he has broken the rules of Engagement. This is where the main courtroom drama really starts. He enlists the help of an old friend from Vietnam Col. Hayes 'Hodge' Hodges (Tommy Lee Jones) who he saved during the conflict ...

Advantages: Good acting, combat scenes Disadvantages: Somewhat predictable
I heard nothing but bad press about this flick but I came out pleasantly surprised. The story concerns a decorated Vietnam veteran, Samuel L. Jackson and a mission to rescue a US ambassador that went terribly wrong. Jackson ordered his men to open fire on a group of pretoestors surrounding the embassy, killing 83 Yemeny people, many women and children. The courtroom scenes show Tommy Lee Jones trying to defend Jackson against a murder charge by arguing ...

DVD Description
William Friedkin unleashes his flare for tense action and gripping suspense in RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, an exciting military legal thriller that examines the moral gray area of combat experience and reflects on the ethos of the American military in the late 20th century. When the U.S. embassy in Yemen is stormed by anti-American protesters, Marine Colonel Terry Childers (an intense Samuel L. Jackson) rescues Ambassador Mourain (Ben Kingsley) from the explosive siege, and under fire from snipers within the crowd, he orders his men to return fire, resulting in many civilian casualties. To appease international outrage at an apparent war crime, the U.S. government court-martials Childers for violating the Marine's "rules of engagement," and his only hope rests on Marine lawyer Colonel Hayes Hodges (Tommy Lee Jones), a veteran who owes Childers his life for, ironically, a war crime committed by Childers in the Vietnam War. An intense, chiaroscuro courtroom drama and brutal combat film, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT takes a difficult look at the moral ambiguity of life in combat and the value of guilt, honor, and loyal sacrifice in the duty to one's country.
