QUESTIONS?

b. Name a film that caused mayhem in our house when I tried to return it to Blockbuster?
c. Name a film that I had to buy on the way back from Blockbuster.

If you have failed to catch the cartoon “The Rugrats” on BBC Television, ITV, BBC Choice, Nickelodeon or on any of the Videos that can be purchased, rented or stolen. Then you have missed out on a very important part of your intellectual growth. I jest not and I will try to expunge my reasons forthwith.

THE MAIN CHARACTERS
Tommy Pickles:
Our hero, he has been described as being 6 months old but with Dill
as a baby brother, I doubt his mother was that absent minded. He is the leader and all the other kids look to Tommy with hero worship status, especially Chuckie.
Dill Pickles:
He was born in the First Movie, so I put him at about 4 months – 6 months old. Superb name! Dill’s only claim to fame thus far is his extraordinary passion for covering everything and I mean everything in very thick, gooey drool, lovely.
Chuckie Finster:
Best mate to Tommy aged at about 2 years old. Chuckle’s mother is dead and he lives with his Dad, Chas. It is his ardent wish for his dad to find a new Mommy.
Angelica Pickles:
Cousin to Tommy and Dill. Angelica is no angel. When there is trouble she generally is the cause. She is a spoilt brat, both her parents are High Powered business types. I remember one line in a show, where Dad says to Mon “The Fax is Broken”, and the mother replies, “Use the one in the upstairs bathroom”!!!!!
Phil and Lil:
Friends to the Pickles Rugrat’s tribe. They are twins and eat worms, mud, left over vomit. Nothing unusual there then?
Stu Pickles:
Dad to Tommy and Dill, husband to Dee-Dee.
Dee-Dee:
Major absent minded mother of Tommy and Dill.
All of the children apart from Angelica cannot speak, that is to say that they cannot communicate with adults but they communicate easily with each other. Their imaginations give sway to an amazing array of comical predicament and in whole the movie is a Roller Coater Ride.
The opening scene sees Angelica and the other children in room adjacent to an ongoing Wedding Reception: Music from the Godfather is playing, Angelica sits masterfully, her hair combed back……….
After the wedding we see the Prehistoric Monster “Reptar” loose his head during a rehearsal for a theme park stage show in Paris. The boss a one despicably horrible and anti-child female named “Coco LaBouche”. She summons her private secretary “Kiri” to get the machines inventor Stu Pickles, his family and friends to Paris to fix the problem.
The plot further thickens when Coco must display her “mother” side to her Boss to enable her to become President of the Japanese Company that owns the Theme Park. This where Chuckie and his Dad come in.
Coco pursues Chuckies father to be her husband and therefore get her prize. He rest? No chance, you will have to watch the movie.
The overall story is interjected with humour for children and humour for adults. For only adults could understand some of it, the Godfather Scene for example. The writers have created a better film than the Rugrats first venture onto the big screen. The result is a heart warmingly funny and sad film. A family film without all the gushy, gushy gooey bits that I hate.
It has to be said that the creators of “Rugrats” have happened upon a magical formula for giving us both the adult “outside looking in” on the toddlers and their adventures whilst not knowing the half of it and the children “inside looking out” and frankly having a ball with their unusual communal imagination, were we ever like that?
One final comment regarding the whole Theme park concept:
Why oh why would they want to put a Japanese Theme Park in Paris anyway? Personally I think it’s a great idea and some other Theme park outfit should think about it doing it soon!
